Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

hi i am considering getting a 2000xl
my friend has lent me a s3000xl he dosent use and i am looking for a way of sequencing/ triggering it and my hardware synths and drum machines.

my question is when it comes to sequencing external devices with the 2000xl how does it work -as in,
is there a grid system like the matrix input sequencer on reason
or piano roll
or does it have step sequence like the korg electribes

basically what is the interface like for contolling external midi devices. is there a fairly easy way of seeing whats going out on the various midi track sand is editing simple . is it the right road to go down or should i be looking into controlling everything from a computer with a midi sound card.

up until now i have been programing each individual devices sequencer with patterns then sync them up with midi then change patterns manually on each device this is not perfect as i want more changes to happen at the same time in the music than it is possible to execute manually.. is an mpc 2000xl the anxwer
or 2500 or should i go down the computer route

thanks for any insight

Get an xl manual from http://www.forat.com. Xl has no piano roll or grid edit. On the 2k/xl if you want to edit after you record you just use step edit. Recording external midi with the xl is really simple(the setups in the manual) and it's about the same setup with all the mpc models. 2500 kind of has a grid edit feature, but from messing around with the grid edit off the mpc 1000 jjos update, it's not that essential. So I'd save a few bucks and get the xl.

Here's a video on the 1000, but it's essentially the same setup with the xl

And here's a video of syncing a mpc 60 with an s950(last half of the video). Should be a very similar setup.
