slide a note on MPC?

just wondering if its possible to use the "note variation slider" to slide a bass tone from note to note if the bass tone file was 20 seconds long or something? rather than have to repress the pad to change pitch.

try pressing shift+after note then the pad in question. you can assign the fader to adjust pitch, decay, attack and filter as well as the depth of each effect.

As far as i know the note variation slider only has an effect when you retrigger the sample aka re-press the pad, so changing the pitch of the sample while its playing imo is a nono.

Pt3r is right, not even with the pitch wheel on a midi controller.

how dope would that be if you could rock a bass slide with the slider.

I'm trying really hard to make sense of how to use the NOTE VARIATION SLIDER / AFTER button on my MPC 2K.

The manual only helps so much.

If I understand what has been said in this thread correctly, then the slider doesn't have any effect on events already laid out in a sequence. I can live with that, BUT... When i try to I can't seem to get the slider to do anything. I just picked the unit up 2nd hand, so the slider it self could be broken, but all the other features work A-ok.

Lets say i set the parameter to TUNING. Whatever sound I choose automatically plays at the Low Range value. And if I go back to the main screen and move the slider, it still plays the sound at the low range, and won't change. Any Ideas?

Also, what does the value in the "Assing NV slider to ctrl change:" field do? Manual doesn't touch on that exactly.

Copy the sample of your '20 sec bass' or whatever and find a section in the middle of the sample that loops seamlessly to the point where it sounds like a constant tone(can be quite hard to do and impossible for some samples) then assign it to a pad and make this pad cut off the original bass sample. Place the new short loop repeatedly where you want the bass slide and use the slider to create your slide.

This method is an absolute bstard to master but once you get the concept of what you are trying to do in your head then keep working at it and you'll eventually get it right.

Tip: Attack and Decay are very much your friends when doing this and can really make it sound seamless.

need to rock a z4 or z8 for that. i think they got portamento, and pitch bend.

you could do this but you would need a close to perfectly flat bass tone and youd have to loop it perfect

i could only see it being done with a sine wave cause its even so it wont sound awkward.

You got to take really small pieces, if you want you can straight chop half a bar into 64 pieces and put it all back together in your sequence and then use the pitch control, this sounds tight when you get it right but jesus it hurts!! I've only ever done it twice, it took me about four hours just to chop it and put it back together but it was a great feeling when i finished it.

The above methods a bit quicker and yeah only works well on sustained notes like strings or basses (not plucked). It doesn't only work on straight tones though such as sine tones, you should be able to make it work on most sustained notes

use the filter w/ this teq. and a short basshit on 1/16 or even 1/32. the note variation slider is reall ill! it does it all... use it live to create a lead part for the melody/harmony whatever. i wish i could add a few more sliders to my 2kxl.
