Help required with an essay

Hello, basically I'm doing an essay about the Akai MPC 2000's history and influence over the music industry.

I have finished 3/4 of the essay and have been told I need to write about the following, but don't really know where to start...



"on the wider significance you should explore how your technology has been deployed in the work of sample based composition and elsewhere and how this has contributed to the development of new areas of musical creativity. The broader cultural issues relate to how such composition has changed the nature of authenticity in composition - the idea of origination and ownership et al."

If anyone has any answers or hints i'd be very grateful!

to address the first sentence of what i am assuming is a professor's critique. I (personally) would talk about DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing" (every lottle bit of that album was a sample from another source material) perhaps a back story on that album in my eyes is exactly........

currently i've mentioned pete rock and how he uses it for his drums, same as kanye and how he helped to popularise the chipmunk sound in hip hop (but that was mainly done on the the ASR)

one could argue the RZA did the chipmunk/sped up licks thing first, but he dont use the MPC.....

to me Shadow's album was sooo great cause he did just jack a sample and loop the shit, all that source material was flipped, re-arranged, and re-composed to trully create something completely new and unique (in my eyes at least)


but again my suggestion is just one angle you could take on teach's critique

I feel that you're going to be limited if you only refer to one machine, because so many artists used samplers other than the 2000. Pete rock never used a 2000, he has an xl now but before that, he used the sp1200, and dj shadow uses the 60..if you could I would make the essay about samplers and sampled music in general, I think you'll have a better essay. But I also don't know all the artists that have used the 2000, so you may know better if you can get a lot of info on it

ah i have to focus on the one sampler, so have chosen the 2000 seeing as it's recognised as being the most popular

artists to use the 2000 are kanye, pete rock, kev brown and da beatminerz

You should have choose the SP1200. IMO

It sounds like your professor wants you to explore how sampling is viewed on a social and professional level.
