New kits for MCD in 2000 classic no solder, UPDATE!! PICS!!!

Hey guys, I have put together some kits that will allow you to install a cf reader or any other ide device (zip drive, etc.) in a 2000 classic. This consists of a db-25 to 50 pin internal scsi adapter that mounts in the smpte slot, a 50 pin scsi cable, and a SCSI to IDE adapter. This kit is super easy to install, and costs only $50.00 USD with free shipping to United states. For an additional $5.00 I can also provide a bootable card reader (with no housing, but can be mounted in a floppy drive casing)

I didn't feel like opening my classic up again because I must have taken it apart and put it back together ten times last week, and since she's runnin' perfect I don't even wanna mess with it anymore, but the following are pictures of what you would recieve in the kit:


Step 1. This is the magic adapter that installs in your smpte slot and gives you an internal scsi port



Step 2. This is a standard 50 pin scsi cable that will allow you to hook up two scsi devices to your new internal scsi port, so you could have for exaple a card reader in the floppy drive slot, and an internal hard drive mounted inside at the same time!



Step 3. Since SCSI Zip drives and SCSI card readers are so hard to find these days, you'll also need this if you would like to hook up an internal IDE ZIP 250 or one of the millions of readily available IDE CF Card Readers



Now that's what's included for $50.00 plus shipping.

Like I said you may also purchase a bootable, hot-swappable card reader from me for an additional $5.00 (it shouldn't add anything extra to shipping since it will fit in the same box:

The only other thing you need is a regular old DB-25 to DB-25 SCSI cable (the one from your zip drive should work just fine)

if you don't have one, I may have a few extra, but not enough to complete all the kits I have ready, here is a picture of what this cable should look like:



This cable goes from your original external SCSI port to your newly installed SCSI port that is now in your SMPTE slot.

Trust me, you can look all over the web and pay five different shippig charges and might end up with a possibly incompatible set of peices, or you can order for me for less than what you'd probably pay in the first place, and only one shipping charge and you will be garaunteed a working setup.

Yeah, I learned everything I know from dasination's thread, I wasted a lot of money buying parts that didn't fit, weren't compatible, etc. So Once I found the right combination, I ordered them all in bulk to bring my own price down and help other members of the community who might be struggling with the same problem.

BTW, I am able to use sandisk 2GB, and Kingston 4GB with my setup, (probably more but those are the ones I have tested)

A 4 GB split into partitions A-Z is wonderful!!!!

Load times are faster than zip, but not a huge difference, even though I've done the conversion to IDE (ATAPI) the bandwidth is still limited by the original "parallel scsi" protocol. The real advantage is in the seek time, since there are no mechanical moving parts, the seek time is greatly improved, but the burts data transfer rate is about the same.

Just before i shell out my new best friend, is this hot swappable or is it a turn off, remove, turn on with new card in. also (just quietly) 4gig card working! your a GENIUS!

I never had a reason to try hot swapping, but I don't see why it wouldn't work? I can switch zip/jaz discs so why not a CF card, they are on the same SCSI bus? All it seems one would have to do is switch from the SCSI CF drive to another then and then back to the CF drive when another card is in.

I don't know for sure though, this is pure speculation because I have no need to remove my CF card while my MPC is running. All the samples I need are loaded before my MPC boots or saved to the card after sampled into the MPC.

Cheers for the info. The only reason i ask as the research i had done regionally here (New Zealand) for similar tech was that the CF drives were NOT hot swappable but i believe this is due to the way the drive is accessed etc. but a you say. if you can indeed get 4gig (and hopefully more!) then why the hell would i need to change it out! looking forwards to this. just gotta get the damn anniversery trip to Tonga out of the way so i can get back to finishing the mods.

Yea I don't ever see filling up the card but...... I will warn you (you probably already know) there is a file limit on the MPC (per partition) so partition, partition and partition some more! Enjoy yourself on the trip and good luck.

sorry for the delayed reply, yes, this is exactly how you have to do it to hot swap, switch to flash rom (weteher you have one or not) and swap cards, then switch back to the scsi ID with the CF drive on it. Yes 4 gb kingswton they're only $13.00 at new egg, I even have a couple of those (used) I couold come off of if you want it all in one nice neat package.
