Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Chase Crusher Mon Mar 01, 2010 12:31 am
ok, I have searched all over for this ALPS STEC12E07, but I dont think they make it anymore, or they changed the part #.

http://www.alps.com/WebObjects/catalog.woa/E/HTML/Encoder/Incremental/EC12E/EC12E_list.html

this is the alps page, does anyone know what part I'm looking for? or anywhere I can get the old alps part in america?

Allied has a listing but its a special order, should I just get it from vst??

thanks fellas

ALPS - EC12E24204 L17 I believe was my most current order.

I'd have to dig out the parts to get the exact numbers.....

There were two in that line, both with different lenght shafts... I think 14/20mm

I think the original was a 10 or something, I can't seem to find that,
But I think it was the 14 that fit with the 'knob' just fine

Pretty much anything in those lines is gonna work tho

I've ordered a few variations from Mouser, and the difference is the length of the peg.

They are hollow and I just cut them down to length. Careful not to tweak the crap out of it and you'll be fine

Have replaced more than 20 of them. All peachy

Are faults with the encoder on the 2KXL common? I just switched mine on after a few years boxed and the encoder just doesn't work.

yea they eventually go out. but i wouldnt think just sitting in a box would do it. maybe it had pressure on the jog wheel and you didnt know it. or maybe it took a bump on accident and you just werent aware of it.

Yep, someone must've have dropped something on it. I replaced it with a new encoder today and it works fine again, only problem is that the shaft of the encoder supplied as being a MPC2000XL spare is about 4-5mm too long! Now the jog wheel sits a bit too high and looks a little vulnerable. I really don't want to have to replace it again.

Bumping an old post again. I've been looking for the compatible rotary encoder for MPC-2000XL as well. I don't feel like ordering from the MPC specialist again (I think it is a bit expensive, and it seems that I'm going to have to keep replace it every year), So I checked Mouser and other vender.
I did replace the encoder on my XL less than year ago, and the encoder feels a lot loose already. I think the reason why it wear out so fast is that the job dial is too big (in diameter) for the encoder, therefore it get too much pressure when it is used.

Anyway, SMC (where is he now?) is right on, ALPS ES12 rotary encoder can be used:

http://www.alps.com/WebObjects/catalog. ... _list.html

I think EC12E24204A2 is the one that fit MPC-2000XL the most, but I think the shaft (actuator) is longer than the original Akai parts. (I don't know for sure, it may fit well, without cutting the shaft.) Electronically, they are totally compatible. It was the shortest one I could find.

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/ALP ... 9P1g%3d%3d

LIke SMC said, I cannot find the rotary encoder with short shaft (I think it should be 10mm in height, not shaft length)

It does not have to be ALPS parts. Bourn, for instance, also make rotary encoder, but I haven't find the right one with short shaft.
I've just checked Mouser, they do not have the short one. If you don't mind cutting the shaft (actuator), EC12E24204A2 should work fine.

(UPDATE: actually, as it turned out that EC12E24204A2 is 2mm SHORTER than the original, so you know. I think I'll order from Mouser.)

Bumping the old thread, but this is one of the most asked questions on MPC Forums.

I ordered this encoder (for MPC-2000XL) from mouser.com. The encoder is less than a dollar. I ordered 6 of them.
This is the item:
688-EC12E24204A8
ALPS Encoders
12mm 24 RES 24 DTENT

The plastic shaft is longer than the original (I couldn't find the one with the same length), but it can be shortened with utility knife. It took me a few minutes to shorten the shaft.

Left one is the original, center one is a new encoder that I modified the shaft length, the right one is a new encoder without mod.

I just installed the new encoder shown above (the one shown in center in the photo), and it works great, it is not too sensitive (i.e. it stops and feels stiff in a good way.) The one I replaced was from famous MPC specialist. It was too sensitive even when it was new. I like this ALPS encoder much better. Recommended.

Bringing back a old thread...

But I think I've find a better encoder for MPC-2000XL.

It's this one;
Bourns PEC11R Series
PEC11R-4215F-N0024

http://www.bourns.com/data/global/pdfs/PEC11R.pdf

Unlike other encoders, this encoder uses a shaft shaft.

This is where I found out about Bourns PEC11R Series;

http://www.adafruit.com/products/377

Quote from the page:
This rotary encoder is the best of the best, its a high quality 24-pulse encoder, with detents and a nice feel.

(Note: The encoder on the page has on/off switch also, therefore it is not for 2000XL)

The shaft length is 15mm, which might be longer that the original encoder. If that's the case it should be filed to make it short, which is a bit tricky (but can be done), since the shaft is made of metal.

Now, if only we could get a brand new LCD screen replacement for MPC-2000!

Thanx JVC :worthy:

I actually repaired rotaly encoder by the info.

(you can see the photo, right clic:open photo)

Item is:
EC12E24204A8
ALPS Encoders
12mm 24 RES 24 DTENT

I think item is just 1-2$ around.(17$ on MPCstuff! )
it's longer than original.you need to cut about 5mm.
but inside is empty(like pipe) ,so it's easy to cut.
as JVC say, the item is more solid to revolve than original.I feel this is better than original one.

left:original , right:after cutting

fortunatly, I did not need take back panel off.
it was possible to solder with turnning mainbody sideways.

but real problem for me was reconect pad sensor conecter.
it's difficult to reconect in right space again without removing whole pad sensor... :?
