Proteus 1, 2, 3, FX are older and different machines.
Though, buying them for the preset sounds is not very economical, when you can buy sets of the samples on CD from Emu for just a few dollars. I have a 9 CD set from Emu that essentially the sounds of all their modules. Not all these CD's are available anymore. They are in EIII format so the MPC2000(XL) can read those CD's directly.
the filters on the proteus series are very nice. anyways, there are other modules by emu that you can add the "proteus" expansion rom, to get those sounds. IVe got the emu px7 and the mophatt rom. Actually, if youve got an mpc, i would sample those sounds (at least all the drums) sample the drums in beats mode too, that way you can get some breaks, chopp em up, then rearrange them for some cool break type stuff.
but alot of dudes are selling the proteous 1000 and 2000 (differance is amount of polophony and expansion card room) they dont have sequencers like the 2500. Dont buy the mophatt rack, because its over priced, buy the extreme lead rack(or vintage keys rack, etc), then add the mophatt or proteous expansion card!!!
oh, the mp7, xl7, px7 are all the same features as the 2500 (i.e. the sequencer) just differant expansion cards. I think these are way better because they have pads too, and you can have a cool little portable unit with loads of sounds.
