Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I just got a good deal on a mpc 2000 with 32mb RAM, 8 outs, and SMPTE for $380, but I don't think its coming with any floppys. I'm going to order a pack, but wanted to check with someone here first to make sure these will work. Or if anyone knows a better/cheaper place to buy from.

Also, this is my first MPC and first time using floppys for saving. Could someone explain how it works with only 1.44 MB per disk, do the samples stay loaded after removing the disk?


(ie). Load 1.44mb of samples > Remove Disk > Load another 1.44mb of samples from a different disk > Then Repeat until all 32 mb are full?

Your Mpc can store 32mb of data in to it's memory. However, when you turn the unit off it's memory is wiped. You use the floppy drive to back up your samples, programs, etc. If your data to backup is more than 1.44mb, you will need as many floppies as it will take. Normal 1.44mb floppies are used. Brand new will be better as they will in theory last longer that an old floppy thats been used over and over again!

Many users use the scsi function. This means you can plug a zip drive into the back to store your samples. These come in 100mb and 250mb. A quick search on ebay for "scsi zip drive" and you should find a few.

The MPC2000 should at least come with the system floppy disk with the operating system on it. You'll need this in order to use the 2000.
If not, you can always d/l it from the Akai website.

So technically this MPC can record up to 32 MB of audio out the box without any floppies?

But if I want to save it, before I turn it off, I need the floppies?

What if a sample is 2mb?

Can I chop it in half, save half to one disk, half to another, then merge them back together in the mpc when I re-load it?

On those zip drives, do they use zip disks, where you can store more than 100mb on other disks, but only save up to 100mb at a time?

Or is the 100mb internal memory?

No it's not internal memory.
Zip drives use Zip disks just like Jaz drives use Jaz disks.
The Zip disks come in 100mb, 250mb and 750mb sizes which you can save/store files up to 100Mb, 250mb and 750mb.
