Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By The Mighty Quyn Thu May 27, 2010 2:59 pm
Hey everyone, new here. I've been producing music for about 6 years now...only I used an RS7000. While I love the RS7k, I've gotten rather bored with it and I've always hated the sequencer and sampler on it. I almost bought a 2kxl, back in 2004, but opted for the RS7k because it had a synthesizer on it.

Well, I got a 2000XL for free, so I couldn't pass it up. And I've always loved the sequencer and workflow on an MPC, so I figure its time for me give this a go. Probably the majority of hip-hop I love was probably made on the mpc's so I figure I should be able to make some really NASTY beats on this thing.

I got it for free, however it had nothing special about it, no 8 outs...fx board...still has a floppy...and that brings me to my dilemma. I HATED the load times on floppy's 20 years ago, in this age of flash drives I can't fathom even trying to function with a friggin' floppy, if for nothing else, the limited storage space it offers.

So I've looked into several different storage options, but dunno the ups or downs of any of them. Zips, scsi (internal and external), cf/mcd reader, cd-roms, etc. WHICH, option offers the best advantages and most flexibility??? I'm leaning towards the CF reader, but the internal scsi sounds tempting as well. Really I just want the most space possible, fastest load times, and the least cumbersome...IE, no external power source, doesn't take up space on my desk, no ridiculous loading or saving procedures, etc

What would you guys recommend...I see certain OSes only work with certain types of media. I tried searching, and I read a few of the stickies, but I couldn't find one definitive answer, so I figured I would make a thread, and introduce myself to everyone. 'Preciate all the help and answers in advance.

Thanx,

TMQ

As an ex 2000XL owner, here's my two cent's.

Choose an internal solution such as CF card or Zip drive.

Remember you'll also need another CF card reader or USB Zip drive for your computer so you can quickly transfer samples.

If your computer already has a card reader built-in, it makes sense to get the card reader for your MPC.

On balance the card reader is probably a far better option and futureproof to a greater degree.

You can get any usb cf cardreader for less than $5...not shure why you keep on mentioning pc cardreader as this is irrelevant.

Get a IDE CF cardreader for about $50,don´t even think about zip. Yo can use up to 1GB per card.
Before installing download OS 1.20,save to floppy and reboot.

Cool beans, does it matter the manufacturer of the cf reader? I see mpcstuff.com sells one, but it's like $125. That a little expensive for a card reader too me.

I see you say IDE, just make sure the connection is IDE and I should be good?

ZIP drive and disks suck! Search about CF reader on this forum. It is the most popular topic here.

Good luck!

for free?! awesome! as a 2kxl user for a while i say get the CF reader. i love my internal zip. i organize by disk etc... but as some one saying "future proof" do it! i havent run into really any problems except for a few disks not copying over from computer to MPC....but thats it. i think its just overall easier to go with CF.

my 2 cents

good luck!
