Please help! MPC busted!

I’m new to the forum, but I have a big problem, because some days ago I tried to install a cf card drive in my 2k XL but then when I started to test it, it made a big bang and some smoke came out of shaft where you can build in the floppy and at the same time the RCD triggered. I opened the MPC and saw that the slave connector of the IDE cable touched the transformer or however the yellow thing with the “high voltage” warning on it is called. Since that time the mpc haven’t worked and the screen is only bright with a black rectangle on it. The cf card and the card reader are both busted, I tested it. I think the mainboard is broken, too. Because on the one end of the IDE cable there was the cf card reader and on the other end was the mainboard. I think the power flowed through the IDE cable and destroyed the devices on both ends, but I’m just guessing.
My question is now, how can I test which parts are working? Because I want to replace the damaged parts or resell the working ones. I have another 2k XL, but I’m afraid of building, maybe damaged, parts in the working mpc. Could they destroy my other 2k XL, too?

well I gotta give it too ya... you are determined and hard headed trying to fix that after shorting your machine by installing a card reader.

maybe if you get a new mpc you should allow someone else to do the installation.

I somehow doubt that kind of damage is fixable simply by the fact that there was a loud bang and smoke.


the screen might still be good though which is a plus.

And yes, I think it aint fixable, too. But maybe some parts are still working, so how can I test them? Is it dangerous for the working 2k xl to build in damaged parts?

man, when you have something plugged into a wall it is always dangerous. Personally if I were you, I would sell the machine for 100 bucks or so. If I were me (which I am) I would keep that for spare parts and buy another machine.

the screen is the only thing of value on the machine if it still works, the case and pads also.. and any thing like the 8 outs, or eb-16 if you got them they might be good.

I think I'll keep it for spare parts.
I've just removed the mainboard and saw some red dots on a few conducting paths near the 12v Power Slot. I think they were blown or they exploded, because they got too much power. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

well good luck... next time you plan to install anything, get a computer savvy person to install the stuff inside. turning a machine on with loose ends is foolish and dangerous and top it off it wastes money and time.

Those spots look like it may be corrosion -- not blown or exploded traces. If it's ink on top of the traces, you can try cleaning the spots with Isopropyl Alcohol and a Q-tip.

It is possible to fix the broken motherboard. But based on your experience, you do not have the proper skills or training to even begin troubleshooting the board.

Have you checked the internal glass fuses of the machine to see if any were blown?

Do this with the power off -- with a visual inspection, you should see if any are burnt up.

Keep the broken MPC for parts. Having an extra case, buttons, screen, encoder wheel, etc. is useful to have in case something else breaks.


As it has already been suggested, be cautious when you are working inside electronics. Consider yourself lucky that all that was damaged was your MPC.
