mpc 2000xl wont start up -wait screen/ detecting memory

hi, every time i turn my mpc on i either get the wait msg or detecting memory msg and every thing is frozen! it started yesterday when i tried to record a sample, it just cut out after about 1 second then just crashed. then this morning it wont even start up!

if u can get it to work try reinstalling the os...

if it still says that get ahold of the mem isntall info on www.mpc2000xl.com and take the ram out... i think that the stock 2mb ram should still be available... if it is and everything works with no problem then its the ram...

but it may just be loose so if u can just take the ram out then reinstall it... peace

cheers for the reply man! I had tried summit similar as I had some spare ram, but had the same prob, I tried with no ram like you suggested but get the same results!

It does load somtimes and i can load beats ive made already but when i go to sample it records like a milli second then stops and when i return to my beat its plays some random samples! this is fu**ed up, i love my mpc!
Do ya think maybe the sample part of the motherboard is fried?

This will sound crazy but I uninstalled the 8 outputs and its working fine!
so its not the ram or motherboard,.
i brought the 8 outs fron e bay and has worked fine so far and really helped for mixing down beats, i dont see how that would stop the sampler working, have you ever herd anything like this?
its not the ibm208p i believe its the one for the s2000 but mpc2000xl is printed on the board as well as s2000.

I am having the same problem with my 2000xl which started after I installed the 8 outs, from an mpc 2000. I can't get it to do anything because it freezes at "Wait......" Should I take out the 8 outs, and try to load a new OS? That said I have a multicard reader, will the new OS give me problems with that?

I'm having similar problem, when I'm turning on my mpc2000xl first I see "wait" then "detecting memory", I've tried without ram and with a new ram and with new floopy station without results. Could you explain me in easy words what does it mean and how to "uninstall the 8 outs" (you were talking about assignable mix out?)
I will really appreciate any help cause I bought this mpc about year ago and still trying to turn it on.

That's not a good thing.

Unplug the MPC from the wall. Take the bottom cover off the MPC and unplug the ribbon cable that goes from the main board to the eight output expansion board. Put the bottom cover back on and turn on the MPC. If the MPC boots up, then you likely have a bad component on the 8-outs and the board will need to be repaired/replaced.

Now in reality, it can get a lot more complicated. But I'll save that for when you get there.
The one thing I would like to clarify is that I said Midi doesn't save any sound information...this is true for the base sounds (the WAV or SND files), but midi CAN store information regarding certain sound tweaks. For example, midi will store the note number (the pad / sound played) and the velocity (how loud it was played) for every note. So while it is not saving sound information itself, it is saving sound manipulation information (by default volume), which will then be applied to whichever sound it is playing.

Also keep this in mind:
APS file = collection of PGM files.
PGM file = collection of SND/WAV files + pad assignments and pgm tweaks (attack, etc)
SND/WAV file = the most basic, raw version of the sound

ALL file = collection of sequences (midi data)
MID file = one sequence, with multiple tracks, trigger and manipulation information.

The point of that is, you can't easily 'extract' a PGM or a MID from an APS or ALL file. To save these independently, you can 'save a program and sounds' or 'save a sequence'...but the PGM and MID files are then totally independent from the ALL or APS file.
THIS IS NOT TRUE WITH WAVS/SNDS.
Each program, whether its in an APS or a PGM file, will pull sound files based on THE SOUNDS FILENAME.
So, if you have a sound, called BD1, and you have 3 different programs that use that sound called BD1, if you ever edit or rename or move BD1, ALL of the programs looking for BD1 will be affected.
This is especially important to remember since you are on a classic and I don't think the classic can handle folders. Just keep that in mind if you ever start re-editing sounds after you've saved them.

Ok, i've been doing an experience for the past few days and its working. I had the exact same problems this users have, so i bought a new pair of RAM memories (with golden contacts - from Ebay = 20/25$) and it seems my problems are gone forever.
