Totally Upgrading a barebones MPC2000XL

I recently got my hands on a MPC2000XL. It is in pretty good shape, the pads are nice, but the screen is a little messed up but not too bad yet.

I want to upgrade the ram, FX, 8output, and put in a flash drive. I've actually purchased all the parts and they should be arriving in the mail.

I figure the first thing I should do is upgrade the OS to 1.20, but after that, i'm not sure which installation I should do first, or if I should install all the components at once. I have little experience with this kind of stuff, but I feel comfortable installing a hard drive or internal sound card in a computer and that kind of thing. Hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to do.

I'm definitely looking at the site for threads on this subject, but I wanted to open a discussion for any tips out there for me. Should I install everything at once? Also, would it make sense to bring the parts and the MPC to an electronic repair shop and have them install everything?

do the ram first... then power it back on without putting it all back together (leave the case off)


if that works and shows the increased sample time, then do the effects board... check...

definitely the OS before the card reader. if the card reader requires v1.20 to work... how you gonna install it with a card reader?

I've updated the OS to 1.2 so that is good. It cost me five bucks or something to have a guy at FedEx to put the bin file from my flash drive onto a floppy- so retarded. I had to go there because it was on the bus line and closest.

anyway, I got home and my screen is actually a lot worse than I realized, or it got worse. So I'm going to have to replace it. Its funny because I bought all the stuff to upgrade it before getting the one thing it really needs; a new screen.

At least there is a good tutorial on this site to do that.

Fixing up this MPC makes me a little nervous. I just have to stay focused and work slowly and deliberately and I'll get it right.

I also printed the manual at FedEx so that is really convienent. I did that for my s5000 too. It is cool to see my gear setup with both the beige akai pieces. I can't wait till it is all up and running at top capacity.

I hope you've got deep pockets because the screens don't come cheap... assuming you can find one.

does the 2k classic take the same screen? anyone know?

the 2000 and the 2000xl take different screens. I just ordered one from MPCStuff.com. Yes, I think I am sinking more money into this beast than it would take to buy a different used XL... but I guess I did what I wanted, I helped out the local used music store and am making it into a good machine.

I'm pretty hyped about it actually!

the 2000 and 2000xl take the same screen... the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the unit is longer on the xl model because of the tilt screen assembly. the classic 2000 screen's cable is too short for the xl but it is the same screen. The XL screen can be used on the classic. Some people from what I heard have modified a classic cable to fit.

thats what I was thinkng.

The Akai DPS 12 uses the same LCD, you will need to modify the cable to get it to work in a MPC 2000 or MPC 2000XL.

check youtube man.. they should be vids showing that

everything was fairly easy to install after all.

I did have a problem with saving the FX settings... not sure if its possible
