Hi forum peoples!

whats the maximum amount of a CF card i can use wit 2kxl?
been using a 1 gb CF card for the past 3years and it will soon run out of mb to save on.

Since you dont have scsiforsamplers's reader which goes up to 16 gigs
you are limited to 1 gig....

BUT...

You might be able to load a bigger CF card like 4 gigs
but you will not be able to save on it..

I mean that you will be able to load all stuff placed there
but placed from PC
If you try to save on it
it will save
but only utilise part of it and not the whole thing.

In general you are limited to the multiple 1 gigs cards

Not compleatly true.

The problem is that the 1.20 OS lacks the partitioning tools present in the previous one. SCSIforSamplers drive works with the previous OS so you can use larger cards and partition them on the machine (i.e. 8GB card = 8 x 1GB partitions).

That said, it's perfectly possible to use larger cards in other drives aswell. I have right now a 4GB card partioned and sitting inside my XL and it works just fine. The only problem is to partition them in the AKAI format, which ofcourse is kinda of a catch 22 innit.

new OS = can use most drives cannot partition.
Old OS = Limited drives to use, can partition.

So if you want to use a larger disk, you must find a way to partition it in the proper format.

And now for the really fun part. If you do partition a card in let's say 4 x GB FAT16 partitions that the MPC can read (or the modified version of it the mPC uses). You will be faced with a new problem. The thing is that windows cannot read partitions other then the first one on removable media. So as soon as you hit that card in your PC, you will only be able to access the first partition of it. That is unless you have another way to read the card besides windows.

As always there are ways around it, even in windows. But that requires some serious knowledge about what you are doing. Doing the same thing in Linux is somewhat easier.

In my experience, I have found these two statements to be the case:

IDE card reader using os 1.2 = 1GB per CF card.

Our CF-CARD SCSI card reader using os 1.14 = up to 16GB per CF card.

I'm running the 1.2 os in my mp.
Never experienced any errors since I upgraded to the internal CF reader with the 1.2 os.
So I guess I'll stick with the os I have now

Wasnt there an 8 caracter limit with the filenames from the mp whenever transferring them to the PC?
I Dont really have the guts to transfer my existing folders and .aps, since I have 3 years wurth of beats on my current CF card.

What brands and writing speeds are compatible? the one I have now is KINGSTON 1 GB 3.3/5 V.

On my 2000XL I've got a 8GB partitioned Kingston Elite Pro 133X (#CF/8GB-S2) compact flash card running OS1.14C.

Can someone upload OS1.14C? I can't find it via google and I need those partitions fo more memory. Thanks!

I got OS1.14C from purchasing the MPC2000XL Tutorial from MPCTutor... http://www.mpc-samples.com/product.php/48/beat-making-on-the-mpc2000xl/

OS1.14 will work just the same for you to partition.

This won't work with all card readers? When I update my OS and install card reader, MPC ask me to insert floppy and I can't see atapi drive at all.. 1.20 works fine, but only with 1gb cards and I need more ram for samples. Thanks for advice!

Not necessarily. I had a Kingston 1gig with a white flower on it that wouldn't work. All my Sandisks have been cool.

like 133X, or CF type I card for example?

IMHO... It all depeneds on what card reader you are using. I got a SCSI card reader thats works best with Kingston CF cards. Whereas stinktank mentioned Kingston's didn't work for him.
