Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hey, new guy here.

Got my MPC a few weeks ago but haven't had too much time to work on it or take the time to get on this board.

The only snag I've caught so far (no doubt not my last) is problems with the Note# Assign to pads.

I bought my MPC used and despite my efforts to initiallize the master program assighn field, the same wack note# are assigned to my pads (i.e. A01= Note#37 instead of 35). Pretty much none of my pads follow any sequence as far as note#. I can re-assigns the note# is numeric order to the pads and everything but when I turn the power off of course it goes back into the crazy ordering.

Also, can someone clear up the diff between Pad Assign: PROGRAM and Pad Assign: MASTER.

Thanks!

get mpc editor at www.mpc2000xl.com
u can just save a blank seqs and it will assign the note number in orede

Did Akai program the note# to be all out of sequence like that?

Has anyone else experienced this?

There isn't a way to just fix it?

akia programmed it to correspond with a standard GM midi drum sound set layout I believe.

There is some logic begind the way it is layed out. I have been using my mpc2000 for like 6 years and never had a problem with it.

I did take the time to setup an empty program I load up when I need to use the mpc as a midi controller for reason though.

So there is some type of order to it? I noticed that Pad bank D is in perfect order (D16=Note#98; D15=Note#97; D14=Note#96....) the three other banks are pretty random though.

This numbering has got me curious, does anyone know the full logic behind it?

ejectorset: so what your saying is if I'm running into problems with this ordering when working with other midi devices, what you did is reassign the note# to the pads in order and just save the new pad assign as a blank program and just load this up as a template everytime you create a new program?

I turned on the mpc and loaded nothing, thus starting with an empty program.

I opened reason and setup my redrum with some samples using the typical way I lay things out in that.

I checked the midi reference chart in the reason help file to see what note numbers the redrum would be expect and then assigned those on the program screen on the mpc (shift+6). I mapped it out so the way I like to setup my mpc drums works with how I like to setup my reason drums.

For example in reason I like my kick on channel 1 and 2 and on my mpc I like my kicks on pads 2 and 3.

Once I had it all assigned up how I wanted it I simply assign the program a name on the mpc (redrum.pgm) and save that pgm with no sounds to a floppy.

Now whenever I want to use the mpc as a midi controller I just load up my reason.pgm file which is super fast since it has to load no sounds at all.

You have to understand that the oldschool standard midi GM drum mapping did not have 64 drum sounds.
The mpc effectively has 64 pads.

That is the logic behind it, after note#81 there was no preset mapping to stay consistent with.

Here check out the old GM percussion map:

I think you will find that translates pretty well with the old default sound floppies that the mpc2000 originally shipped with.

The layout was a carryover from the MPC60.

And what was the MPC60 layout based on?

MPC 60 Layout:

Pad 1 = HiHat
Pad 2 = Snare 1
Pad 3 = Snare 2
Pad 4 = Bass (drum)
Pad 5 = Tom 1
Pad 6 = Tom 2
Pad 7 = Tom 3
Pad 8 = Tom 4
Pad 9 = Ride 1
Pad 10 = Ride 2
Pad 11 = Crash 1
Pad 12 = Crash 2
Pad 13 = Percussion 1
Pad 14 = Percussion 2
Pad 15 = Percussion 3
Pad 16 = Percussion 4

The 60 had these words silkscreened on the unit over each pad.

The midi note number assigned for each pad layout, not sound layout.

I am sticking with my position that this is based on GM.

it is based on GM drum mapping on the keys, so when you hook up a drum module, the pads were labeled (on the 60 like Djames pointed out)
I never use it like that, so I made my midi layout sequential and made it the master program so all programs created have the sequential layout.

Thanks for clarifying El Macaco, I should have been more specific. Atleast you understood me ;)

elmacac: This is exactly what I wanted to do. How did you do that? Im still confused between the Pad Assign master and program. Could you clear it up for me?
