MPC and pro tools

whats up everybody. I'm still kinda new to midi, so i'm wondering if I can use it this way. Say i program a beat with each sound on a different track but i'm not 100 % on the arrangements yet. So rather than record audio tracks to protools, i want to tranfer the midi data for each track to protools, experiment with different arrangements there, but still trigger the sounds on the mpc. Can anyone tell me how to configure this on either (or preferably) both ends of the midi cables. I have the two connected and synced up but how do i tell the mpc to transmit the midi data from track one on the mpc, to midi track 1 on pro tools , etc... Thanks in advance for any guidance. rock on.

I think i have it hooked up right on the pro tools side but what do i do on the mpc? Is this where a "dump" comes in? please help. thanks.

you don't even have to do all that, just save your sequence file to a disk and load it up in protools. a sequence on the mpc is just saved as a standard midi file (.mid)

load your sequence in protools and set it to send midi out and you should be able to hit play on your protools and have the sequence trigger the sounds in the mpc. then you can edit the midi tracks as much as you want to build your arrangement.

ok, I did what you said - now i have the sequence data showing on protools, but its still playing the sequence as i programmed it originally on the mpc. What and where are the settings that i have to change in order for the mpc to play the edits i make in pro tools. thanks for your help. peace.

the mpc should play any changes you make to the midi sequences in protools right off once the midi file is loaded.

just to make sure on the mpc switch to a new un-used sequence but leave the same program loaded up.

hit play in protools and if you hear your stuff coming out the mpc it is playing from protools at that point. protools should have some sort of midi editors (drum roll, piano roll, etc) that you can use at this point to add or remove certain hits and copy paste chunks of the mid tracks around to figure out your arrangement.

i tried what you said about playing it on a blank sequence and no go. Is there some sort of master/slave setting or a midi transmit/receive number change or something. i should be able to control the mpc from protools as it plays, right?

RTFM means Read The F***** Manual......But as we all know everything isn't in the manual....the reason why most of the members here signed up......I wish there were heads that was here that still helped cats.......don't take what swiss said to the heart answering the same question after question can really burn you out and as you can tell cats like me and swiss been here for a long time........
