Is it possible you can expand the XL's ram to 64MB (2x32MB), and if so will the system read it?

The MPC will not access more than 32MB of memory - it's in the operating system. You could physically hook up 8GB of memory - wouldn't matter. The os is coded to expect and use no more than 32MB.
