Noob needs help!!

I recently bought a MPC 2000 xl from Guitar Center used. I got it in the mail this week and I am having a hell of a time figuring it out. I am able to get the click track to work when i press reccord, only problem is the pads wont make any sound when i tap them. I've tried to set the pads to a different drum sound, but still nothing. I even set the click track/metronome to the drum sound rather than the click sound, and it simply goes silent. Please help me, this is the most frustrating thing in the world!!!

that is odd... you set the sample to the pad and you have the full level button turned on and nothing?

Uhm again I'm very new at this so I dont have to terminology down but i believe i tried that
However, just in case i did not, how would i go about doing that (laymens terms please)

okay so...

here are the general steps on the 2000xl


step 1)
push shift+4 to go to the sample recording screen, you record a sample

step 2)
push shift+5 to go to the trim screen where you trim the recorded sample so it sounds good and to get the parts you want... basically this is the sample editing area of the mpc

step 3)
push shift+6 to go to the program menu, and if I remember correct (this is off memory from when I owned the XL) you should see something like [drum1][drum2][drum3][drum4] ... well choose drum 1. now push a pad and turn the jog wheel and you should see the sample .. push the pad again to hear the result. you can keep hitting the pad while turning the jog

i have a microphone with a simple chord and adapter
will that work? and if so, where do i plug it in?

really?..plug the microphone cord into the nearest light socket

you bought a sampler.

why?

you have to put sounds in into it.

the easiest way is to plug something into the 'audio in'...then go to the sample screen and capture it.
then go to program screen and assign that sound to a pad.

now when you hit the pad you will hear that sound.

you can now do this 255 more times to completely fill the machine with sounds.

they will disappear once you turn the machine off, so you need to save these sounds...it should have come with a disk drive.

But truthfully, being new and the fact that the XL doesn't have a microphone input, he probably didn't know you can plug it into the inputs.
