hi all asking this question for a freind and his 2kxl the zip discs he has seem to be able save data ( sequences , songs , programmes etc ) that has been say sampled into the mpc but when it comes time for his computer to read the disc from his iomega usb zip drive it doesnt read the disc the drive shows up but when you put a disc in nothing happens you go to say explore the drive and it just says please insert disc like theres not one in there ? i reckon it may be faulty drive but its only recently started doing this hes tried formatting the disc in the mpc then use in the drive it wont work is this a common problem ? or is he doing something horribly wrong lol ?? thanks

i think formatting it on the computer works when you are working on the xl.... I forget to be honest because I haven't used zips in a few years.

yea i think after he formated the disc in the mpc it then didnt read properly in the computer so is that the issue? if you want to format disks only do it in the computer ? any way to salvage the discs or should he just use them for saving programmes etc now ?

thanks

is he on a PC?
i have to format my zips in the xl first on mac 10.5.8. but it seems to depend on what version of os x your using

"explore the drive" yeah that doesn't sound like mac talk lol.

maybe back the files up through the mpc onto and external drive so you can reformat the zips without losing anything.

well isn't there a thread about card turds? lol as funny as that sounds the thread talked about macs placing turds on memory cards so they didn't work on the mpc no more (ie: hidden files  )

yea windows xp is what we all use no one mouse button for us lol but yea have tried to format the disc while its in the usb zip drive but it doesnt seem to want to even do that function its like an invisible disc when its in the drive. i think hes going to just track down some more zip disks but if theres any solutions people might have were all ears :) thanks for the info so far.

was it always not working? how about the proper drivers being installed on the computer?

have you tried accessing the drive manually via command prompt?

the disks always worked but i think the problem arised when he formatted the zip disc in the mpc then after that it wouldnt read on the usb drive the disc still works fine if you want to save samples , programmes etc in the mp but the disks dont want to read in the usb drive making it a hassle to transfer drums etc so my freinds got a whole load of zip disks only mp freindly but not letting him drag an drop samples from the comp to disc sorry if im not making sense im the middle man finding a solution for him lol. i got a 2500 good ol cf cards :) no hassle

never saw that thread.its easy to delete the 2 invisible files that it makes, ill have to try it.

1 button mouse? yeah because we all know if you plug in a mouse with more than one button into a mac steve jobs and bill gates heads with both simultaneously explode and the internet will destroy itself.

yeah I suggest your friend getting a CF card for the XL too... they store more and are more reliable.

You can also try right clicking on My Computer, then choosing Manage.

There's a section for storage (Disk Management) and you can see if the drive is being noticed, and either format it or add the partition.

This is on Windows XP though. I have had to do this to some cheap CF cards before they would be recognised like a normal drive.

your disks arent ruined if your computer cant read them. the data on there is probably messed up, but im pretty sure you can still use the disk if you re-format them. your problem sounds like its with the drive. i mostly use my usb zip for drum/samples now due to a recent incident with my usb zip. when i start using it for beats thats where i get errors, sequences just screwing up.

I made a beat MPCxl w/zip and i wanted to get it on my friends MPCxl w/CF reader. so, i put the beat disk in my usb zip drive and dragged all the data over to his card reader. this was done on mac G4 running leopard, [which i think is culprit.] it worked and we were stoaked, but then a day later he hit me up saying the sequence is glitched up and the MPC says "file not found". i checked my original zip disk and yep it said the exact same thing but with the zip disk every individual sequence for different beats in different folders were screwed. it shows "Sequence1==e.seq" some randoms sounds were messed up too showing "Sound1__=e.snd"

Im guessing the 'e' is for error...?

has anyone had this problem as well? its kinda forcing me to save .ALL, all songs and sequences for every beat now. im thinking this has to do with transferring on my mac i.e. hidden files. its pretty obvious these MPCs aren't mac based.. so yeah - programs, sequences, songs i try to keep away from putting on my mac now. unless some one knows a better way around this?

yea thats what i thought the drive but the main problem came up when any disc was formatted in the mpc it then didnt read in the usb drive but those same disks are able to save data when there in the mpc so basiclly have just become mpc only disks for saving programmes sequences etc.
