[MPC 2000]Problem with RAM?

Hello, I've got a MPC 2000 which I used now for almost ten years without problems, but in the last couple of weeks I get this really weird bug when I startup the machine:

My MPC 2000 has 2 MB RAM, but after starting it shows me 18 MB RAM. At first I didn't mind it because I could also sample much longer than before, but after a while the sound starts to crack, there are a lot of distortion sounds when I'm in the sampling screen or playing sounds.
After restarting the MPC a couple of times the problem disappears and everything is back to normal. I'm still worried.

Anyone got some advice?

Sounds like you've had a MPC with extended RAM for 10 years and didn't realized it cause the contacts of the RAM are dirty. Now suddenly the electrons found a way thru the dirt and you get the benefit of using the memory.
All you have to do now is help the electrons to get in contact with the memorystick by open up the MPC, takin out the RAM stick(s), using a qtip and isopropyl to clean the contacts on the RAM stick and the RAM slot, let them dry, stick in the RAM stick again and close the case of the MPC. PULL THE POWERCORD BEFORE DO ANYTHING ON YOUR MPC!
And have fun with the capability of extended RAM

What do u guys think , I realy wanted a 2500 but I got this one so cheap can I do everthing with the 2000 fine..?? help let me know!~!

So I did as you suggested, took out the RAM (there were two 72pin bars in the SIMM slots), and cleaned ithe contacts. When I start the MPC now instead of 'too much' memory a message appears saying "not enough memory". And after restarting the MPC a couple of the times the messages doesn't show up and I'm back to 2 MB RAM.

Any more suggestions?

Have you tried putting one RAM back in, and then try the other? RAM is very sensitive to static electricity, so maybe one of them got messed up... try taking one ram chip out and turning the mpc on to see if it still has the same problem and switch to the other ram and see what happens... isolate the problem.

I had my 2k classic since I bought it new in the 90's, the first time I got new RAM (32mb) I loaded up and once I started my mpc and loaded a kit I got a screechhing annoying noise, I called up a techie friend who has multiple samplers and he told me to take one of the ram's out and try the other. Seems both were messed up in shipping so I had them exchanged... never had an issue with them since.

It's worth trying some new RAM
It's cheap enough on ebay.

My 2000 used to do the same. Sometime it would read 32mb. sometimes 18.
Sometimes it would even show just the 2mb.

Since I replaced the RAM (about 7 years ago) the problem has never re-occurred.

Just got some new RAM today, replaced the old one and now everything works perfect. Thanks to all of you guys!

if you get an mpc 2000 with standard ram can u upgrade it to 32mb?? or are you stuck with the lesser memory??

You can put two chips in for 32mb... 16mb each... but the 2mb standard doesn't apply anymore when you add the two 16's in.
