super unresponsive cursor keys

so i just got my mpc 2000 classic from daddys junky music ,everything seems fine , cept the cursor keys are very unresponsive, i have to put mad weight down on these buttons to get them to function. seems like a bad connection or something. was wondering if anyone on here has had a similar problem and if so hwas it an easy fix and howd ya do it. thanks in advance

well the cursor keys are very important for your workflow to be functional in an easy way.

Do not put pressure on them as this might destroy the inner soldered connections or anything.

I experienced this problem twice in my MPC's life.

Best thing IMO is to open the mpc's case
get the faceplate of and try to see if they will respond by pushing the switches directly with your finger

In my case the did respond well and all I needed was something inbetween my switches and the plastic buttons (folded paper )

Hopefully your problem will not serious but try this to check.

The other case woyld be a destroyed solder connection. Simple solution to that a sldering iron and some solder and you are done.
An indication for this might be that it is a bit loose or something like that. You would be able to see it once you open it up

PS. when you pen it you need to take of the plastic bit of keys to see the switches (as of in the 2k xl of mine)

not gonna lie im kinda nervous about crackin this open, machines over a decade old its prob gonna be prone to damage if not handled carefully

you can throw these things down a flight of stairs (not recommended tho)


the "tact" switches are available at radio shack, or digikey.com..

Honestly, every time I open it the only thing I feel bad for is those poor screws.

The rest is like a tank!!!

again thanks for the fast response and great advice, i ordered new cursor keys off mpcstuff.com only 5 bucks. if that doesnt do the trick i wanna correct the problem correctly (not that the folded paper isnt correct) just rather not jerry rig it if i can help it, thatd be like a last resort. if i was going to go into radio shack and ask for the replacement "tact switches" what would i specifically ask for so that the sales associate would know what im talking about,or a part number or link to the spcific thing i need on digikey. also if you have any suggestions on gage of solder or type of iron thatd be cool too. if theres some kind video out there as to how to do thatd be the best.. thanks again !

Don't get the cheapest iron you can find...it will just make things very hard to work right.

Most Radio Shack employees will know what you are talking about. If you are changing a few switches, it may be most cost effective to order a large quantity from an electronics supplier such as mouser. If you have one or two switches that are bad, it may be worth your time to replace all of the tact switches at once.

The part number for the tact switch at Mouser can be found in this thread linked below. You can also find them on eBay

last question, sorry guys. i just wanna make sure im shutting my 2k down right. theres no special shutdown screen or function i need to activate before i power off righ? just hit power while on the main menu? i looked thru the manual and couldnt find anything about shutting down properly

Just turn it off.
Of course you will lose the samples in memory.
