quick question about the outputs on the XL

is there a difference in sound between the 'main' outs and the headphone one? (i searched on here, cant test it atm)

{im trying to figure out how to set my stuff up in a way that makes sense (without having to unplug everything five times per beat etc etc) this info determines whether i need rca/jack adaptors}

I don't know the exact difference, and they are linked together via the main volume knob, but just be sensible...only use the headphone outs for headphones. If you can use your main outs, you will likely get a much cleaner signal...the headphones probably have small headphone amp + impedance circuit.

Of course I'm all for hacking, and if using your headphone out for something other than headphones opens up new possibilities, then just do it.

and the only think im hacking is old stereos (making shitty guitar amps.. we're on hiatus now hehe)

oh and another idea i just had:

(i dont know my mpc well enough yet, i have to check if its possible)
using the record ins as returns from effects (which get their signal from the individual outputs), i think you can choose where to 'monitor' those ins right? so for example:

main outs: drums, output1: bass, output2: synth, output3: 'main sample' (going to a delay for example, connected to the left record in of the mpc, monitoring on either the main outs or some available individual output)

Your thought about using the record ins as returns will not work with a stock mpc. And by that I mean, not without some SERIOUS hacking. You'd basically need to rewire the internal routings.

On a 2kxl, you can only monitor the record ins while you are in 'sample' mode.

A shame, but reality.

edit: the 'likely' and 'probably' were also not to step on the toes of your own opinion...but it's safe to say that in a professional environment the headphone output will def not sound/work as good as the main outs.

i know i should read the gnikcuf manual, but can you play a beat in sample mode? probably not i guess :p

Your assumption is correct sir. Quick question though...why don't you try using your stereo outs to record? I have the 8 outs but I haven't used them in years. I tend to like the signal of the stereo outs more. Of course this is all just my opinion...

well, at the moment recording is to my dads old imac. it has a minijack (stereo) in, and i have a minijack cable+ jack/minijack adaptor. (im looking to get an interface eventually) if i were to record from the stereo outs, id need a (2x TS)/TRS cable (if that exists :p ) and an adaptor to make it fit in the minijack hole..

If that's how you are doing it, then just do whatever works. Headphone out is fine.

edit: I guarantee you can find a cable that is 2 1/4" plugs to one stereo 1/8" plug, but this also is a good excuse for you to learn some soldering and make your own cable.
