Swing Settings

Anybody know where I can get tips about swing settings on XL. I know how to use the swing function but when I mess with it it never really sounds "groovy"...just moved

Theres no real 'do this, do that' setting

We dont even know what kinda music u make. Are u sure uknow what you are looking/listening for? Swing complements good programing to begin with. You need a (like most things in life) good foundation

A good way to check the effect of different swing settings is with a really simple 4/4 house kick & a closed hi-hat playing all the 16ths in a bar. Then you hear what gets moved & what doesn't. It might be that you are working with a beat that doesn't need any swinging!

Man, your swing settings are like your signature sound. Sometimes, you can achieve the same thing with timing off, and then you'll find how to accomplish the same thing with swing/earlier-later. Sometimes, you lay everything down in 16th notes, melody included, and then you realize what needs to be earlier, later, swung, or both. If you were to lay kick/snare/highhat ALL at, let's say 4 later, 53% swing, they wouldn't sound swung OR later, cus there is no relative sound to compare them to. Likewise, if EVERYTHING but one sound, say a hihat, is later, then the hihat, relatively speaking, will just sound earlier while the rest sound on time. EXPERIMENT!!

Hey, someone else chime in on this, cus he needs to know, but... I don't want to give misinformation. When you shift a swing, and/ or earlier-later setting for ALL notes in the open window, does that only effect the track you opened window on, or all tracks?

only the track on the 60. Course there is no open window in the 60.

Thank God!!! Im glad the 6000 has minimal open window parameters.

Hmm, I was really referring to the 2000XL, as we are in the
2000/ XL section here. I believe that's the machine this dude was inquiring about. Hey, I like the sound of the 60, but chill, I can't F wid it.

trupro, you pretty got much got the idea. that was a good explanation.

by applying swing to "ALL NOTES", it effects all notes that "can" be affected by swing. Meaning the notes between every 1/8th count will be shifted later by however much percentage you select in the swing setting. ie. the 16th notes between each 1/8th count will be shifted later. That's the most concise way of putting it...

if you need an illustrtion of what I mean by "notes between every 1/8th count".. I'll do my best.

definitely experiment with it, have a house 4/4 going... keep it simple so you can hear what is happening, maybe just kicks, toms and hats. Then go into the swing window and only hats to correlate to swing and shift earlier by 1 (or more if you really wanna hear the change!) and see how you go.

aight yall. Thanks for the advice I will experiemt with some of the basic patterns and move the ticks back and fort. I will let yall know what I come up with. Yeah I am using the 2000xl and the type of music is r and b and rap...good looks

No, I feel you, but still confused about if ALL effects every track in the sequence, or just the track you pressed 'open window' on for the adjustment.

it only effects the track thats open. but when you go to a next track be sure to set it back to normal because the swings settings will stay until you change it back.
