Stuck between a rock and a mute assignment

I have the 2000xl. I can't assign my mute assignments. I get to the mute assign window, but thats where I get stuck. How do I assign the mutes? Do I press the pads I want to mute? If so, I tried it doesn't work. Tried using the cursor buttons, jog wheel... nothing. I have the manual, and read the mute assignments part, but have no clue how to assign the damn mutes. If anyone can help, please do. Thanks.

You have to read it carefully. ONE pad can mute TWO other pads. So you have to hit the pad that you want to MUTE out the other pads first. Then it will display the pad number it is... Then there's TWO open assignments below. Cursor down and you can hit the pad that you want it to silence. then you can select a second. I remember screwing this up for a while before i got it figured out. Use some longer samples to try this out with so you KNOW if it's working. Don't use drums if you're having a problem hearing weather it's muting or not.
