MPC2kxl + Midi to CV = ?

So I don't use Midi except to synch my DPS and MPC when recording.

I don't really know much about midi. I know, I know, the thing is a MIDI Production Center. But I use the sampler/sequencer for my own nefarious purposes and don't play with the controller aspect of the thing.

So a friend just gave me a JKJ CV3 Midi-CV thing. Does anyone know what this can be used for? Am I far off in thinking it will take a CV from say an oscillator and gate some midi thing with it or vice versa?

How would YOU use this thing?

Not seeking a huge breakdown of MIDI and systems. Just a general idea of wtf this thing is. Can't find much on the webs that makes sense. I remember someone talking about using the out from a 2kxl as a CV or something...

Ha what can I say? I <3 midi.

CV stands for 'control voltage' and was close to the pre-midi standard of having different devices talk to each other...think early analog synths + modular systems.

Whereas midi sends out a digital message, like NOTE44-DURATION200-VELOCITY90, CV sends out raw voltage...I think somewhere between 0-5volts (I've never used CV).
So your pitch CV might be 3.3volts, your gate voltage might be 1volt that lasts as long as the gate needs to be open, and your velocity voltage might be 4 volts...all that voltage gets converted to some useful control signal inside the synth. Again, I don't use CV so that example might be way off...but it illustrates the point.

So the idea is that you use your midi->cv converter to send midi note information, timing information, etc, and output it to a synth that does not have midi.

For people into old synths, a midi-cv converter can be pretty valuable. There are other pieces of gear that might be a crappy synth or drum machine or something, but are actually valued for their midi-cv conversion...or vice versa.

Now I'll let someone with CV experience fill in the gaps / make corrections.
