SCSI CD-ROM drive/Burning CDs

Hi,

I have a SCSI CD-ROM drive that works great, it came with my MPC 2000 Classic when I bought it, also included were this 3 CDs with several programs... I can load and work with those programs with no problem... Also a couple days ago made a couple backups for security purposes, what I noticed is when I put those CDs on my PC, Windows explorer do not show any files, it is like those CDs where blank, anyways when I use Nero to make some copies Nero just copy the entire CDs with no problems at all... I tried this 2 times and both times worked great (weird to me because I can't see any file when used the Windows Explorer) anyways... I have some programs on floppies that I thought could be great to have those also backed up on CDs just in case my floppies die... so I copied all those programs with sounds inside a folder and then I tried to copy all those sounds and programs (without the folder of course because the classic can't handle folders) and they were copied in the CD, I can see the files are there (something that I can't with the others) but when I put that CD inside my SCSI CD-ROM drive the MPC shows Type=?????? and I can't see any file... I thought maybe I did something wrong burning the files, so I made another copy... same ish... I tried this 3 times already and then I thought maybe those CDs needs to be burned in a special way? some old kind of technology or specs that I don't know... so I decided to come here and ask... exist out there a special way to create CDs for the MPC2000 Classic?
Any help would be really appreciated.

not sure, but it may be also worth trying to make the disk as an audio cd (for regular music) but load up all the samples. Some cd players dont go over 99 tracks for audio... so the burning program likely wont let you put more than that many files.

what about those .PRG or .MID files? also remember I already have this saved as a programs so there are not .WAV files... just .SND...

oh true, for those I am not sure.. maybe there is an akai format.

I dont know though because you know that disc that comes with the 2000xl? well that seems to be a simple normal data disc, and I was able to see all files with windows...

Yeah I have that CD too and I can see all the files in Windows, but remember that CD it was designed for the XL, since all the files are inside folders I can't use it with my 2K classic... I don't have the right cable to try my XL with this SCSI drive I would like to see if those burned CDs works with the XL...

For the records, when I try the CD that comes with the XL on my 2K classic also shows Type=????? so most probably should exist a special way to burn CDs for the 2K classic...

CD's made for the 2kxl can be made as regular ole standard data cd's.
2k classic cannot read standard data cd's.

Nero wouldn't care what cd you burn as long as you choose the options to make a complete and unaltered copy.
Nero would copy the whole cd AND the special image, that's why your exact copies work. If you drag, drop and
burn files, you are not copying the special akai cd format.

Thank you Lampdog, that was a great answer... but now I have this question, how I can make an Akai image format CD?
exist any way to do this using Nero or any software that I can have installed in my PC?

if you can find the file type, maybe check things out like disc juggler... or programs like that.

Not with AkaiDisk. As far as I know, the only way to make a CD-ROM in Akai format is to copy the image of an entire SCSI disk written by an Akai sampler using CD-R software.

I just finished reading the post and he basically archived the imagine on his MAC, I'm able to burn CDs too using Nero... what I want to learn to do is to create my own CDs made with my own programs and sounds... what I read on AkaiDisk website is the MPC2000 use a DOS format, I tried burning a CD using DOS option included with the Nero and no luck...

You have 2 hurdles ahead of you.

1. You must find a SCSI cd-rom drive that the MPC2000 will recognize. Not all CD-ROM drives will work. I am going to assume that your CD-ROM is recognized by the MPC2000.

2. Once you get a recognizable CD-ROM Drive, you must use CDs that are Akai-formatted. For an MPC2000, any cd will NOT work. A burned CD using your computer will not work. When you try to acces the CD, the format of the CD will not be recognized. The TYPE will show as "???????".
Sure you will burn your .wav files (stores in your computer), to the CD. But the cd format will not be correct.

If you wish to burn your own cds that will read on an MPC2000, additional computer hardware and software will be required. There is a program called 'disk2file' that will help you Akai-format your CDs. Do a search on the internet for more information on this program and the procedure. And the additional hardware is maybe using a hard drive that will have all your files, from which you will copy a mirror-image to your CD. It is a bit involved so if you are still interested in adding a CD-ROM Drive to your MPC2000 setup, take the time to learn more about this program and formatting your CDs.

oh, i see.. that is very interesting.. it's like you need to copy a ghost style clone image to the disk.. it must require the file allocation system from a partition in the 2000 format.. even when on CD discs.
