Pops, Clicks and such while recording samples...

I have an MPC2000XL with the internal ZIP drive.

I've been noticing sometimes lately that when recording samples, some pops and clicks show up during the recording, and subsequently onto the sample. I'm not quite sure what could be causing this. However I think it has to do with either the disks or the memory in the machine.

Is this a common problem? Has anyone else had issues like this?

Actually no, I haven't been sampling off of vinyl yet (still have to find myself a mixer or at least a receiver/amp to power the table...that's another story.

So far I have been primarily sampling WAV files off of my iPod. The sound definitely occurs AFTER the sample plays and records into the MPC. So it's not from the source.

oh that is odd.. if you could make a recording of the issue and upload it for us to hear that might prove useful for diagnosing the symptoms..

right now though I am leaning towards (since you said it monitors fine when recording but screws up during sample playback) .. a ram issue maybe (which is where the sample is stored) try removing the ram expansion if you have one... try again and see what that does.

the thing about the 2000/2000xl is, it comes stock with 2 megs built into the motherboard, right? but when you add the 32 meg expansion to the system (ie: two 16 meg chips) you wind up with a total of 32 megs, not 34 megs.. that is because it bypasses the stock built in memory I believe.. dont quote me on that because it is just my theory. none the less, when something is wrong with the ram it can cause jumbling of the data the audio files are made up of... which can come out sounding like clicks and what not..

It doesn't seem to be the cables because the sound only happens DURING recording, and then during playback of the recorded sample. If I just play from the source into the MPC without recording, there are no pops and clicks.

if you hit the pads after you sample an get the pops an crackles i would say you got bad ram in you're machine.
i had that problem a while ago having pops an crackles on my samples when i was recording, my problem was i had bad ram in my 2000xl, i replaced the ram an ive never had the problem since. you can get the ram from ebay very cheap, i would say replaced it an you wont have the problem again.

Thanks for the tip, logick1. Makes a lot of sense that it would be the internal RAM now that you mention it. Initially I thought it was the ZIP drive but then realized the samples don't record straight to the drive; they are saved afterwards by user.

I'll try that and see if it fixes the issue.
