Hi all,

used the search but couldn't find anyone with exact same problem as me mate.

He basically bought an mpc2kxl of me other mate....everything was fine until one day he hits record and it crashes....but wait on restarting it say insert mpc disk...so i come round having copied my o/s to a floppy...insert that and voila it works...paul goes away dubious but happy that its working again...

so i get a phone call last night from a shaky voiced paul saying same thing is happening and now it wont read the floppy....easy enough, i put the o/s on a new floppy and it worked but the next time it asked the for the disk again, and the next time and the next time....so this is a bit of a prob...the mpc is losing the o/s every time its powered down and reloading it from a floppy on every reboot....bit of a pain....so i copied the o/s to his hard drive..made it the default for the auto-load function so the mpc goes immediatly to the partition and scsi ID ive specified to pick up the o/s but why does it want the o/s every time it reboots?

this doesn't fill me with confidence that it loses the o/s on every power down..anybody else experienced and fixed this? apologies if it is covered in the archives i just couldn't find anyone with the same problem..

My MPC 2000 needs the os to be loaded up every time it is switched on. You get used to putting the os on every zip or keep a floppy with it in the drive so it automatically boots from it when you switch on. I always thought the xl was the same until someone told me otherwise in another thread recently.

I was going to say is it definately an xl he has....but as you've seen it you'd know.

I'm not sure what sort of ROM or RAM the xl boots internally from, but it sounds like a problem with that....maybe the first crash erased it! Or he has a very rare xl that thinks it is a non-xl......

good points....i think you may be onto something with the internal rom it uses...although how to restore that i dunno.....it's definitly an xl...and is the same version as mine as me and my original mate bought from the same place around the same time....

i think the first crash may have erased it...anyone know how i can restore...doesn't seem to be anything on any of the akai sites...

"anyone know how i can restore'

Boot, shift+load, select the OS, OK.

yeah in the load screen theres an option of "copy operating system" maybe you just need to copy the os to the ROM instead of just loading it.

but there is no option to copy to internal ROM (or is there my eyes couldn't see it last night)

My friend's 2k had a similar problem, we couldn't copy the OS effectively, it would always ask for the disk.

THe problem was that the metal sliding bit from a floppy got stuck inside his drive, it would still read disks, but it would detect a floppy inside on power up even when there was none, so it would not check any other HD's for the floppy. Probably not your problem, but it might be.

yeah i read that in the post i found about this and had a look...but couldn't see any slider stuck in it...he swore blind nothing had ever been stuck in it and it read the second floppy i copied the o/s to...he's bringing it round at the weekend so im gonna try what mpc3000 said...
