Replacing MCD w/ Floppy

So before I start I realize that floppy is slow, I understand that zip or mcd is more reliable than floppy disks. So lets just say that i am doing an experiment in workflow. Organization and file management. So without further delay...

I have a MPC 2000XL MCD, it has a single slot for a compact flash. It has treated me well, but frankly, I have been neglecting it in the way or storage. My files, my programs and my samples are all over the place.
So what I would like to do is revert my machine back to floppy.

Can someone give me a hand and kind of walk me through this process?

This is incorrect. Floppies are probably the most reliable. Zips are probably the worst storage medium in existance, and you may get more data per RPM on zips but I still find them to be slower. MCD would be the best, but in my experience I still find floppies to be a little more reliable. Depending on the MCD drive, it could be equal or worse.

It's pretty simple, I think on the xl you just turn the machine upside down on a bed. Take the bottom off, unplug the Ribbon & Molex cables. Swap/screw in the floppy!

IMHO I love floppy, will never use anything else.

cf cards is better than floppy... but floppy is way better than zip. I hear that MO drives are not too bad, but with cf... that is pointless.

The difference in speed between the floppy port and the scsi port is quite significant too... surprisingly.


by the way... if you have the mcd... the actual multi card drive... avoid using the ones that aren't compactflash... those ones are not as reliable on the 2000xl.

Thanks gentleman, I am really hoping that I will be able to switch it out tonight, and get going on the floppy organization. Im glad to know it should be easy enough.


What are you saying about the MCD? I only have the drive with a single slot for compact flash.

ah, no problem then... sometimes people have one with multiple card types.. sd, cf.. and that.. my advice was to use CF when ever possible because while people seem to get the sd to work and some people dont notice issues... they tend to be less reliable than CF according to what I have noticed (generally speaking... after a few years reading about people's issues relating to those drives)

OH! and a side note... on the 2000xl, one thing you can do and I suggest is... make folders on the card for every new project. Dont just leave all your stuff in the root of the card... every song should have it's own folder with all the stuff saved in it... nothing that is not part of the song should be in the folder...

Thanks for the tip, I am cluttered as it is, so i think floppy is going to force me to clean up my act.

Just curious if you were able to replace the card reader with the floppy yet. i have a internal zip that is giving me problems and i am having trouble finding zips easily. i have a box of floppys and want to replace the internal zip drive with the floppy drive.

so do it... it takes a normal floppy drive... and a normal floppy ribbon cable.

Floppy = 1.44MB !

this week... I did my first mpc60 beat that required a second floppy to save all the sounds...

Haha, I'd like to hear that. Unfortunately I think I blew my power fuse last night. Im just wandering around my house, unsure about what to do. Normally I would be on the MP around this time.
