Filter or Compress

When i sample i can never really filter the drums out completely.Should i buy a compressor or can it be done in Soundforge or Cool Edit?I think i can do it through the Roland Vs840Ex,maybe.Thanx...Peace.

You rarely can filter the drums out completely... You should use a mixture of filtering (to get most of it out) and Limiting (cuts out the loudness of the drums so you can barely hear them and when you layer your own drums the original drums are not as noticable)...

The problem with limiting is that it can take all the life out of your sample as well... Note that limiting only works well on samples where the drums are louder than the sample... If the sample is louder you'll end up cutting out the sample and the drums will actually stand out more...

Compression is the worng way to go usually... This would prolly make the drums stand out even more...

maybe you can try phasing them out? not exactly sure how this works, but ive heard techniques where you can get rid of vocals this way. like switching left and right channels. or off setting channels so the phase is off and cancels.

or anaylze each left and right channel.....maybe the drums are panned more to the right.....delete the right channel and copy the left to the right; then filter.

can someone elaborate on the phasing out?!!!!

What people were talking about is inverting the phase... This would be impossible in this situation...

Let me break it down:

You have an option in CEP and most other Audio editing softwares to use a Vocal cut... What this does is inverts the phase of your current sample and layers it right on top... This inverted phase flips the sine wave 180 degrees... This basically cuts out everything dead center in the mix (since this is usually where vocals are laid out it cancels out vocals, but it also cancels anything else dead center)...

You could also use this to cancel out a beat and get an A Capella... Though this is very tough to do...

In this case it'd be impossible to do this to the drums... Because you'd have to have an original recording of just the drums you are trying to get rid of... If you had the master tapes of the recording to do this it'd be possible... But then again if you had the master tapes you wouldn't need to cancel the drums out anyway...

I had copped this program called AntBytes that could supposedly remove vocals but it never worked right.Does anyone know of any type of program that can do this?....Thanx...Peace.
