Programming cutoff in step edit?

Try as I might, I can't figure this out.

I recently got a used 2000 XL and its NV slider is broken – I'm waiting for a new part to arrive. I've been making music on the machine and I'd say I understand most of it.
One thing, though, that I can't figure out, is...can I edit filter cutoff changes in step edit, or program them in at all? Or can it only be done with the NV slider?
I've read the manual and roamed the forum but I can't figure this one out.

Whoa, i actually got the NV slider today and soldered it in (didnt think it'd come this fast as i ordered it on Friday from another country).
Anyways, I guess I've just figured out you can't do a filter sweep using midi data on the 2000XL (I know you can do that with an envelope though) as the type of data fed by NV slider isn't real-time, it's note-on.

You CAN program it in step edit.
1. Assign the parameter you want (attack, decay, filter or tuning) to the pad you want to use.
2. Record the pattern with that pad in real time or step edit

3. You'll see that the notes in step edit now have another parameter depending on what you assigned it (Atk, Dcy, Tun or Flt). You can set different values on every event of that pad. You can also change from Flt to Atk for example.

I was gonna say its definitely possible... Are you mabye trying to change the cutoff after you recorded the midi notes? If I remember correctly you can only dial in post NV data using the toggle on/off button above the NV slider.

So if your recording a beat, and then trying to go back and tweak the NV slider that might be why it isnt working....

you could also program in realtime or step edit via 16 levels

The problem mostly is that I can't or dont know how to do sweeps.
E.g., if I record a long synth sound that I hit only once and keep it pressed for 8 bars and would like to do filter tweakage without triggering the sound again...I guess that's not possible?

yea sorry no realtime 'sweeps' on an already playing sample.

you can get pretty far faking it though - chop the sample into sections is one way, retrig the sample is another, alter the filter each time you trigger, program the envelope accordingly.

but for what you are talking about you will need an external filter to have that kind of control over it.

I was also disappointed by the lack of real time control at first. And I definitely got over it once I realized how much the MPC can do with velocity data alone ( velocity% edit, 16 levels, note repeat ). Its not the same as having CC/aftertouch but a lot quicker and easier to just try and use velocity IMO. It keeps all the sequences nice and clean too.

this is very true - turning off vel-> volume and applying it to the other params will show you a new side of the mpc.

Yes, it's one of those things for which you usually figure out a workaround, and often limitations can work for you - and not against you.
