Note variation slider problem

Im 99% percent sure my slider is broken. Im bummed because I just bought my xl and I havent been able to get it to work. I got it used by the way. And in a week I have become quite attached to it and dont want to get a different one.

Anybody know how much a replacement one costs. And where I can call to order one. Or do I have to go to a repair shop?

Is it like a mixer crossfader? Cause thoughs are easy to replace.

whats your proof that its broken? You just brought the machine you may not be using it right. You have to refer to the manual how to use it. My machine doesnt have the names of the buttons on it anymore so I cant call the name. I know you press and hold shift then the button below shift. Then tap the pad to select the sound you waant to be affected.

Yep, what he said. Hit your shift button, and the button above the slider (assign). Then hit the pad/sound you want to be used with the slider.

done all that. Ive read the manual completely for this machine. I dont ask questions if I can find it in the manual first. So basically nobodys had this problem I take it.

Just saw this thread....mines busted too. With mine, no matter how you set it, it just goes to really low value and stays there. Like if I set it to control a pad's pitch and then move it, it will just go to a really low pitch and stay there, no matter where the NV is set, and no matter how many times the pad is retriggered as the slider moves. If I really pull up on the slider while moving it you can FAINTLY hear the pitch change. I emailed Forat about it and got this answer back:

thats exactly what mine does too. That doesnt seem like such a bad price. Depending on how easy it is to do the labor and how much the part costs. Plus you have to include shipping in the deal so your looking at over 100

It depends on how good you are at soldering. The actual slider should be around $30 give or take. The solder points for it are pretty small, though, and it mounts directly to the motherboard, so I'm gonna have the service center do it (maybe Forat, maybe this other group I emailed that I'm waiting to hear back from). I don't trust my hands on the motherboard...if this was an expansion board that could be replaced if I f'ed it up, I'd give it a shot, but soldering for me is a real hit or miss thing. I've changed out some backlights and things, but when it somes to this one, I'm letting the pros do it.

I'm doubting it....I'm not sure whether Akai or Micro$haft is more proprietary.....I think I'm getting closer to voting for Akai on that one. Just barely, though.

For the price, I think I'll just have him do it. Rather pay ~$100 than fry a several hundred dollar mainboard with my wack ass soldering skills.....

Just as a side note, I figured Forat would be one of the most expensive repair jobs in the world, but I called several little "one man shop" repair centers, and they all wanted roughly the same money. The cheapest I saw was maybe $10 off of Forat's price, and with their history of repairs and mods, I think sending it in there would be a good plan. Just a thought. I'd rather deal with someone huge and well-known in the MPC community than an unknown quality of repair through a shop I've never heard of two to three states over. Maybe just me, but I have a lot more faith in Forat to stand behind their work than I do just some random guy in his garage. Not ALWAYS the case, but I think this is one time to go with the big guys, since the price is so close anyway. I DID just email a service center in Colorado, about 15 minutes from my house, to get a price quote. If they'll do it for the same money or less and warrantee their repair, I'd just as soon do it locally so I don't have to ship my baby.....it didn't do too great on the ride from New York to me originally, or possibly the guy that had it before was just a dumbass and dropped it on the front panel, but the volume pots were pushed way down and the Note Variation slider is totally dead. Once I opened the MPC (done it about 30+ times now I think.....heheheh) I fixed the volume pots by just bending the mount theyre hooked to back into place, but that damned NV slider is a little more work apparently....

$30?! More like $3.50 from electronics parts suppliers. The part is RS45112 with a L15 lever length. If you can solder at all, it is a pretty easy replacement. It is NOT mounted to the motherboard but rather to the PC Operation Board.

My bad....how is it that you know damned near everything about this machine?

Still my soldering skills are terrible, so I'm going to have to send it or take it somewhere...

Any local electronics repair shop should be able to take of this. It is not a 'proprietary' part. At the shop I worked at, we charged only $35/hr which seems to be only half of everyone else's rate so $80 for replacing it may not be bad at all.

Hi mine is broken aswell just wondering what you ended up doing or if anybody else got it fixed at a local repair shop. I don't want to have to send it somewhere.. does it need special parts?

If I can't get it fixed I might decide to sell it and buy a new one. how much should I ask for it if I sell it on ebay??

So you would be selling the xl because the slider is broken just to buy another one where the slider works?

I'd say just get it fixed, either by forat or by a local repair shop.
