My 16 levels don't work

It only works when it wants to. I find myself having to turn off my mpc in order to get it to work again. With this being said, is there a hardware malfunction or are my buttons just faulty?

Give a better explanation of what is actually happening and what you do that makes it happen.
Might help us see the point of failure.

when I press the 16 levels button sometimes it takes me to the screen where it asks me if I want to use velocity or tune. Sometimes it doesn't respond at all. The only way I can fix it is when I turn off the mpc and turn it back on again.

On a blank floppy, download the os, unzip if need be, there are two files, place them on the floppy, load just as you would a sample.

alright but before I do all this, how will this fix the 16 levels?

If the tact switch under your 16 levels button is failing, the button is unlikely to respond all the time. It may work, or it may need 5 or 6 presses, or even an ultra hard press. And if one tact switch is failing, i would guess that the others are not that far behind in terms of life expectancy...

If you still cant get it too work, a little work-around to get a delay effect (if thats what youre trying to achieve with the 16 levels) is..

Turn loop on in Trim and the go to edit Program > Drum (1, 2, 3 or 4) > then select your sample and go into params, turn up the decay to like 66 or something

now when you hit that pad, it will have a delay effect on it and can always adjust the decay and the loop start and end points

That would be my answer, the button is probably broken, you might want to open up your MPC and see if its loose or broken if not then go with what LAMP told you.

Thanks guys for the responses. I will def try out that decay technique as soon as possible. I took the mpc apart and lightly poked the 16 levels button a little bit and it is indeed falling off. I checked the other buttons and a lot of it is in worse condition. I hate to admit it but I think I might have to retire this 2XL soon.

Thats an easy fix tho, just replace the buttons. Unless the circuits are damaged and what not even then Im pretty sure you can buy parts for it.

Sounds more like he's talking about the plastic button not the actual tact switch.
Seems highly unlikely that he would have tact switches failing off.
