I want to play out my drum sequences live in one take, but I want to track mute as well. Is it still possible to track mute my kicks, snares, hi hats, etc. without muting the other sounds as well? Does this make any sense?

not on the xl exactly like you say.

i mean there are hacks - you could go into program edit and for the pad change some parameter that makes it silent. or use the mixer. or even better yet, use the 8-outs and a real mixer (if you haven't tried this yet - it is really fun).

but if you want to use the 'track mute' - you have to use different tracks.

This is what you will have to if that's how you want to perform.
As for existing songs you can copy the drums to multiple tracks then just delete pads to make each track have a single sound.
You could also just put some time into step edit to create things.

or when you do the copy function you could only copy a single pad

i do still think youd be best off with 8-outs and an external mixer.
