Floppy drive stops MPC booting & clicks

I've got a two MPC2KXL's (lucky), which have been working fine until I decided to try upgrading one to have Compact Flash storage.

I hadn't updated the firmware from 1.4 to 2.0 before trying to connect the CF reader, so of course that didn't go according to plan.
But when I reconnected the Floppy Drive (& removed the CF reader) the MPC would not turn on & the power supply (at a guess) makes a ticking sound each second.

When I remove the Floppy Drive, it boots fine...

I checked the second MPC & it's having exactly the same problem, although I've not attempted the CF upgrade at all.
I'm able to use the Floppy Drives out of both MPC's in my PC to copy files.

I've tried searching but can't find anyone describing the same fault.

Any clues would be awesome.

In the past when people have had power issues when installing the CF reader, they were plugging the ribbon cable into the wrong spot on the motherboard.

i was about to say the cable might be upside down...

I was plugging into the output slot
