Advise about Step Edit Basics please

Got a MPC 2000 !
I love it.
Virtually spotless and nice and clean.
I remember seeing these for £1000 in music shops back in about 1999 and just thinking "wowzers that looks like the biz" but only having £200 and getting a crumby piece of plastic junk that fell apart a few years later.
Man these things are beautiful
And 10 years later I got one for 220 quid.

Anyway I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out the step edit , basically it's format is unlike any drum machine's step edit I've ever used and I don't quite grasp how it functions.

So if anyone could give me any advise or point me in the right direction I'd appreciate that.

I have a S3000i sampler too, and them things seem to last forever.
They just don't make things with that level of build quality anymore.

It is step edit, not a step sequencer.

It shows you what events and other data are on the particular step (time location) and track that the sequencer is on.

You can move through the sequence in time steps, or jump from event to event on the active track.

Try it out:
make a sequence, free handed, timing correct OFF
then select a timing interval
open step edit
use the "step <" and "step >" keys

then try "step </>" keys while holding the "go to" button

you will see whats going on. I constantly have my fingers on those 3 keys every time I enter step edit mode.

Yeah..I'm getting there : )
I can tell this is going to take me a while to get fluent at.
I'm used to the grid system of Alesis sr16's and Boss Dr Rhythm's and had assumed Akai 2000's used that, so at first I couldn't work out what's going on at all.

The go to + step method is very useful, and thanks for the PDF manual also.
I've just about sussed it out now.
Just installed the extra ram to take it from 20 seconds to a big juicy 6 minutes!
Time to build some beats!
