BEWARE OF THIS NYC SELLER/REPAIR MAN

MPC HEADS FROM TRI-STATE/CT AREA BEWARE OF THIS SELLER.

I am writing this post to hopefully save someone from going through exactly what I just went through trying to acquire an MPC2000 classic. (I do take partial blame for this as well)

Anyways, like most of you I've spent some time searching MPC hashtags on various social media sites to check out what everyone else is using in their setup and what not. This searching led me to the Instagram page of "Loopwholebeats_NYC"

Upon finding his page I discovered that this dude had TONS of MPC's and SP1200's for sale. I also noticed that he had thousands of followers with who he was talking with on his page. So I reached out to him via email and instagram and inquired about making a purchase of an MPC2000xl with some upgrades done to it. He responded rather quickly saying that he wouldn't have any more XL's in until next week but he did have an MPC2000 classic, and I quote "that had been serviced and was in 100% working order with new screen, disk drive and 32mb upgrade." He also stated that he was looking for $400 on the unit. So with the new screens getting harder to find and with the upgrade I figured it was a fair price and worth a shot. (Yes, I know all about Ebay.)

I spent the next week feeling this guy out. I got the feeling he was doing the same to me so I felt ok about buying a machine from him. We texted back and forth and he sent me a picture of the unit. It looked like it was in great shape. We had agreed to meet in Grand Central Terminal in NYC to make the transaction. BIG MISTAKE. (This is where my blame comes in.)

We set a time and place and I met "Scott" at the main entrance to GCT on one of the busiest days NYC has had in years. He was wheeling around an old newspaper cart that had my MPC in it. The very first things he says to me is "Yo I forgot the power cord and I don't have any sounds to test either, but here's the boot disk." Fearing this would happen, I brought my own power cord and headphones to test the machine. We plugged the machine in and it booted right up. I saw that it powered up and all the LEDs were on. I noticed the disk drive was loose, slider was loose and power button cover was gone but didn't think much of it because I knew it was used. Not having brought any sounds with me to test (very stupid) and GCT being crazier then normal I decided that the machine worked and paid him his money. We talked for a few, he told me if I had any problems at all to save his number and hit him right up and he would resolve any issues. We both went our ways. As soon as I got home I was excited as all hell and turned the MPC right on. After booting I realized the machine was completely frozen on the home screen. Absolutely no buttons or pads were working or responding. So I called "Scott" immediately and surprisingly he answered. He was very shocked to hear the machine didn't work and told me that something probably got "jostled " on the board en route to GCT. He informed me he was going to work out a time to meet me the next day and swap out the machine he gave me for another one...all very convincing.

After inquiring about what time he would like to meet me the next day I started to receive a whole different level of service and attitude from this guy. No time was good for him, it wasn't easy to come meet me, he would let me know...blah blah blah. (All while posting new pics on instagram of more broken looking mpcs for sale) I got beat. Flat out. He has still not contacted me at all about this issue.

Feeling defeated I took the 2000 apart and discovered some really unsettling things. Yes, it did have a new screen and 32mb so that was good. BUT that was about it. The boards had obviously been soldered and "repaired" by someone. It was one of the worst hack jobs I have ever seen. Globs of solder all over the place. The Slider wasn't even soldered into the board at all. A true mess. Now, I don't know if this was his work or someone else who previously owned the machine but what I DO know is this is NOT what was described to me in the emails as what was being sold to me.

I got the machine to boot up again and since I had tightened a few things down on the board it was no longer freezing. My record in, stereo out and headphone jacks were all producing terrible distortion though. That board received the worst solder job of it all. This thing was blown. I wanted a classic machine and what I got was a pain in the ass project. Nothing on this unit had been tested or serviced like said. How could you sell someone a machine that makes sound without checking the outputs?

Lesson learned, can't wait to get this baby up and running. This dude could very well be the best MPC repair man/salesman in the world and I just slipped through the cracks...but I highly doubt it. Be careful everyone, he also advertises to stay away from Ebay...probably because of buyers protection. I have emails and pictures of this entire mess as well so if anyone wants to see them just ask.

Here is the Adda pcb board. Waiting for the replacement in the mail. I will let you know of my progress. Thanks for the responses.

Wow, thanks a lot. I just ordered a new board off ebay. I will let you know how it goes.

I don't want to put anyone on blast by posting pictures of anyones social media pages. If you want to see the pages I did post the user name to search for in my long, poetic story. I just wanted to write a "yelp" like review of my experience to save anyone else from this. I was pretty pissed when I wrote that, I've since calmed down and am very excited to get this machine working.

Let me know how it goes with the replacement AD/DA board. I have an extra board that's perfectly healthy. Any parts that you need, I'll sell for much cheaper than anyone out there, since I'd like to help out, and I'm not concerned about making a huge profit. These parts will sit in my closet until I need them or anyone else does. I thought about rebuilding the other 2k recently. But it's gonna end up costing me more money to complete. So it's better that I part it out and help out the community.
