i would say its da paint.....but datz outtta da picture!...umm...just wipe da bottom of ya mpc off..and da surface its on........see if da flakez come back

Did you buy it used? I'm guessing you did.
Do the flakes look like the paint on the MPC's case?
Has it recently had anything new fitted inside?
If it looks like paint from around the screw holes maybe whoever you bought it from looked inside to check everything before selling it.........& scratched things up a bit.

If you are comfortable openning it up I would. Just inspect the PCBs and connectors to make sure there is no major crusties or oxidation going on. Finding a problem now and correcting it is better than finding one when you need the machine.
