Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Haha no but seriously...I sat down and sampled a couple hundred things off my drum machines over the course of a few weeks and I saved them all (Root Folder), but now that I'd like to organize everything, I have no clue how to move the samples around. I mean, I can create my new folder (Kick Drums) in the Root Folder where I have all my samples, but how do I get my corresponding samples into my corresponding folders? On a computer, I'd just drag and drop all my kick drums into the folder for kicks, but it seems you can't do that here.

The only alternative I have found so far is to basically load up every pad with sounds from the Root Folder, then open whatever folder I want those sounds saved into and resaving each individual sound into that folder. Is there seriously no way to "grab" a sample I have out of the Root Folder and then being able to drag it down into another folder?

It just seems ridiculous that to create Kick Folder, I basically have to assign a different kick to all 64 pads, then resave them individually into a Kick Folder, THEN clear out or reset the machine so I can continue loading more sounds to save into folders.

I have hundreds of samples...it's gonna get real tedious if I have to sort through them, assign them, and save them all over again...

Why don't you put your MPC disk in your computer and organise the sounds that way?

Otherwise, best way is to load up all the sounds you wish to organise, assign them to a program (do this as you load each sound) and then resave the program into a folder.

Off the top of my head, not sure if any MPC is able to move sounds around the disk (MPC4000?), they have very basic file handling features, even the most recent (5000) doesn't have those features.

I would be careful of messing with an MPC formatted disk in a computer.

You can possibly load the sounds without assigning them to pads, by scrolling the Assign to note: field to --/OFF, then save as All Programs and Sounds, which I think 'should' save all the samples you have loaded into memory, and then delete the .APS file it saves along with the samples.

I have a CF card reader in my MPC, so there's no way to put it in a computer :/

Sounds like I'll be stuck spending a couple days loading up all my different sounds and assigning them to my pads and Programs to resave into different folders then. I guess when I sample my drum hits from now on, I'll have pay more attention to what folder I'm saving in.

Buy a CF reader for your computer?

But as I mentioned above, be careful, it 'might' corrupt an MPC formatted disk.

Personally I've never had any problems with MPC2000XL disks in Mac or PC and have freely used the same disks between MPC and computer for over 12 years. I've also never had any support emails from customers having any kind of corruption problems transferring my kits to their XL.

The XL can read standard FAT format disks no problem so CF cards should work out of the box.

CF card readers are pennies on ebay, as would be a second CF card which you could use to perform some tests if you are in any way worried.

Without swapping back and forth between computer and MPC, how do you backup your projects and how do you use samples from the net?

MPC2000 format is not standard FAT.

PC FAT into MPC2000XL, no problem.

MPC FAT into computer, I would be very careful with important data.

I would use a separate transfer only disk to move data from the MPC into the computer.

But maybe I am just being paranoid, maybe it isn't a problem at all, maybe it is just something I got into the habit with on an MPC2000, maybe the MPC2000XL is fine with it.

Maybe that is why MPC2000XL OS 1.2 forces IDE/ATAPI card readers to format as a single 1GB PC compatible partition, to avoid issues.

I don't use a computer at all for any step in making music or samples, so I try to avoid them at any other cost, production-wise and hadn't thought of the idea, but I'll have to swing by Best Buy or try the net and see if they have any CF card readers then and try it out.

If you have all of the sounds that you want to put into a folder open already, then you just select the desired folder (so you can see it in the top right corner), go to the save screen , select "save a sound", move the cursor down to the sounds and scroll through them saving the ones you want. They will still be present in the root folder but once saved in a new folder they can be deleted. If the sounds were being used as part of a program it won't be able to find them and they will need to be reassigned. I think this is right. IMO the folder/saving/loading system for the 2kxl is really counter intuitive and causes quite a bit of frustration.

Thank you! This was the answer I was looking for, or I should say, pointed out something about the MPC save architecture that I suspected was true, but just couldn't figure out, being that I could indeed save within other folders without an external device or process.

And as per someone else's suggestion in the thread, I did pick up one of those multi-card readers several weeks back and have used that for bouncing around files on the MPC since. Definitely worth the $20; recently acquired an E6400 Ultra, so I'll have to find ways to bounce those files over to a PC for formatting/conversion and onto CF cards to load up on 2000xl as well.

What I can't figure out is how to have a saved program and sounds autoload from a folder. I have always wanted to save all my projects in individual folders and then just have them load up when I turn on the MPC. It seems to me that you can only autoload from the root folder. If you go to a gig it is ridiculous to load all sounds individually. This necessitates having them saved in the root folder which makes other folders somewhat redundant. I'm sure there is an easy explanation but I can't find it. I have a Renaissance too but I have been trying to get back into the 2Kxl and really get it mastered.

Autoload might only work if saved to the flash rom. Unless you mean something else. Without that you'll always have to load up your sounds.

You should be able to save a program and sounds in the same folder, and have it all load when you load the program and assign it.

You can only load up one .APS file with an autoload, and that loads from the root folder, so just put the .APS file/samples (and .ALL file) that you want to autoload at powerup into the root folder, and save other .APS files into programs that you want to load up later in the set into their own folders.

You only have to load the .APS or .PGM file once, and that will load up the corresponding samples, you don't have to 'load up all sounds individually'.

Also not sure how you expect to have all your projects saved into individual folders, and have them all load up at once, since you can only load one .APS file at a time, with it's contained programs/samples/etc. Maybe I am not understanding how you are organising and saving 'all your projects'.

Thanks. Yeah I'm not understanding how I am saving my projects. I have recently just started putting samples onto CF card. I just had a whole bunch in the Root folder and they would autoload into various programs like "808". I decided to put sounds into folders so for example I put the 808 sounds and the PGM file in the folder "808". Obviously they don't autoload from there but in order to load them up I have been resorting to doing it individually sound by sound every time I turn on the MPC. I can load the PGM but the sounds don't accompany it.

Are you sure that the sounds that you loaded into the program when you saved it originally are in the same folder as the .PGM file you are trying to load.

Programs load up with their corresponding samples here.

You don't have to load a program, then load all the corresponding samples for that program individually, you are doing something wrong.
