Can anyone here vouch for the said 16GB SCSI storage that they (mpcstoragesolutions.com) sell whether internal or external? Just asking so I dont waste my time at all whether they have a return policy or not. Thanks.

bought all my hotswap card readers from mpcstoragesolution to use on 4 of my samplers in the past. did both internal and external. did internal on an mpc2000 a few years back (pain in the *ss) but it worked perfectly. actually preferred external for this sampler. did internal and external on the mpc2000xl (used 1.14). internal install is easy but realized when I switched out the internal zip I still needed the zip drive because I had lots of my sounds on zips or bought sounds on zips and could not access because I needed the zip drive. Actually preferred to keep the zip in place and opt for the external model and hook up to the back of sampler. I do not care what anybody says zip drive is still needed in setup. The other benefit of an external model was that their card reader was compatible with other samplers out there. So if you are looking to pick up other samplers chances are the card reader will work with them. The card reader they sell will use any capacity memory up to 16gb (operating system limitation). So you can use 2gb,4gb,8gb,16gb cf cards. I personally can vouch for these guys compared to other characters and questionable outfits I have dealt with in the past. never wasted my time and never had a problem with them.

Just know what you want to do with your sampler and storage needs. some folks are just happy using a zip drive and zip disks.

I went with the external too after seeing some people had problems installing their own, plus if I ever need a new mpc I can just plug it in to the new one with no worries. I actually have the flash hard drive, and the hot swap card drive but only use the hard drive really. Been working great for me for years and not a single issue. Big programs load up in a few seconds rather than waiting 10 minutes for a zip to load and then die.

i have thought about doing this as well...problem i have is that i can't get my zip discs to even work...i spent 400 bones on getting my mpc fixed, including the fuze for the SCSI drive...im afraid i may have popped it again....

I received the external version, although I wanted the internal hookup and all they had this time was external, then later took the unit apart. The drive inside of the external box is an SCM brand PCD-60B drive. I did some research on how it works with the MPC 2000xl and I found mixed results. Possibly this has something to do with the firmware? I figure if I can read/write to my CF on the external, then perhaps the drive already has the firmware what makes it read/write whether internal or external?

the firmware version is 1.28. when format is pressed on sampler, version=1.28 is shown on screen. a pcd-60b with this version works for both as an external and internal (have both cases in 2 of my mpc2000xl s) so you should be able to read/write to cf card in pcmcia i/ii slot. any pcd-60b with an older version firmware should really have it updated to the latest version (1.28). as for the mpc2000xl, i use os1.14 so that i can use 16gb cf cards.

yeah, i said before, the folks at mpcstoragesolution.com are pretty cool and deliver pretty reliable equipment. the pcd-60b card reader has really been an effective card reader solution for me.

The firmware on mine is 1.28, so that's good news! Now to wait for my SCSI ribbon to arrive... Blah.

I put the internal SCSI ribbon in the MPC, set the MPC's OS 1.14 and set the MPC to look for SCSI-2 with the jumpers on the drive set to SCSI-2. I also have tried SCSI-0, SCSI-1, and SCSI-4, still nothing has worked as an internal. I'm sure that the MPC sees the drive because it gives the ??? message when I turned the termination off. With the termination on, the MPC takes a long pause while checking memory, then says that there is no SCSI to be found. Anywho, the internal CF drive is an SCM PCD-60B. I've been seeing mixed results about this one, so I'm not totally surprised with being unable to use my PCD 60B internally.

If the pcd-60b works externally, then it should work internally. jumper to desired scsi id per the scsi chart on underside of pcd-60b. I believe termination is set to ON (it is set for external application)

things you should have done

1. using internal floppy/zip drive, change os to 1.14. (reference mpc2000xl manual) and check os version.
2. change out floppy/zip for pcd-60b.
3. connect 50 pin ribbon cable to internal scsi port.
4. connect power cord (make sure pcd-60b gets 5V)

insert compact flash card in cf-pcmcia adapter card and place into pcmcia I/II slot. Power ON sampler and allow it to boot. Do SHIFT LOAD and scroll thru ID until you get to the card reader's scsi id. It should be recognized.

If it is not working, then

1. check operating system to make sure it is 1.14
2. check ribbon cable to make sure it is properly seated (or perhaps a bad cable)
3. make sure jumper being used to terminate is making contact with pins.
4. remember only the pcmcia I/II is recognized. other slots not recognized.

there is something not right in the transition. it should work.

I tried it, and it worked during the test!! That's a good sign. However now that I've put my MPC back together, it's not recognizing the drive?

something happened when you put your sampler back together. maybe the ribbon cable became loose and is not seated (connected) properly. just need to make sure everything is securely fastened/tightened. as I said before the pcd-60b works perfectly with the mpc2000xl. go back into your sampler and check all connections. good luck.

I think I'm good now. After I got it all together, I put OS back 1.20 on. I only deal with 1.14 when I'm formatting disks over 1GB. The lower capacity cards I have like 1 or 2GB are 1.20/PC format so I can back my work up on my computer's cloud app.

forgot to post...i received my external cfcard reader in the mail this past saturday for my mpc2000.... i got home unwrapped it, plugged it all in... i was nervous when i turned it all on, hoping it would work...to my surprise, it booted up like a champ!!! this thing has made my work flow so much quicker...i no longer worry about how to make the sample only take up a small portion of the floppy disc..or have to load a full floppy of drums before even starting a sequence...this drive has made my life so much easier!!! lol
