Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Just picked up an external scsi cf reader for my 2kxl (got it a great price) I noticed that it contains a scsi 2 ide adapter (acard 7720) and a seemingly normal ide to cf adapter. It had mpcstuff stickers but I saw this same combination on other storage pages explaining that they are not hot swap. Am I missing something here? Just want to make sure, I was also told to power on the reader before booting the mpc and to power off the reader before turning off the mpc or I could blow the scsi fuse? Just checking as it came with no docs, and I am waiting on a 50 pin to db 25 cable. If this is hot swap I am tempted to just mount it internally. Also on 1.14 will a computer be able to see the first 950 meg partition if I choose to partition my card? Thank you in advance.

based on your description, the drive is not hotswappable. the cf card cannot be inserted when card reader is on. the cf card cannot be removed when the card reader is on. in other words, the cf card can only be inserted/removed when card reader is off.

with cf card in card reader and the card reader connected to the mpc, the card reader (like any other connected scsi drive) must be turned on first then the mpc. When powering down, card reader must be turned off and then the mpc. never had a problem.

mpcstoragesolution.com once recommended when I bought my first hot-swap cf card reader that I should use a cf card for the sole purpose of transferring files from computer to mpc so you do not lose your work on your cf cad containing your projects because putting that cf card in pc will prompt to format one partition and you will lose your work. if you use 1.14 operating system and format cf card, then you can use larger size memory (up to 16gb) but keep this cf card is to be used only with mpc. my suggestion is to use zips and floppies for loading work into mpc and use the non-hotswap drive for storing.

hope you can understand my explanation.

peace

Thank you very much for you clearn and concise explanation it is very much appreciated. I have an IDE to CF reader ready to install as well so I may use that to shuttle data back and forth. Format external with 1.14 and then load 1.20 on the MPC for the cf reader.
