I traded an alesis micron for a mpc 2000xl with the floppy (1.44 mb), no memory, (just the 2mb stock), and with the top 4 pads not working. I had bought an internal zip 100 a while back and installed it in my PC, so once i got the mpc i knew i had to get the pad sensors, plus i want the corx and thick pads as well. So, i noticed on several forums about the ribbon cable needing to be the 40 pin and not the standard 39 pin we all have laying around, was needed, but all i did was take my little drill and drilled the blocked out pin on the 39 pin ribbon cable and boo yah! it worked, then i just got my molex 4 pin section with black, red, black, and yellow wires, and pulled out the yellow and the other black wire, (keeping the black and red wires side by side} and it booted right up and worked. Plus i bought another zip drive to put back in my PC so i can transfer samples back and forth. And i knew that the samples and such have to be 16 bit 44.1, but my zip discs were not being read by the computer or the mpc. So i learned by trial and error that once i format the discs in the mpc, they were not able to be read by my PC, but that the discs that were read in the PC, needed to be formatted to the FAT format, NOT FAT 32, to transfer files to the MPC. So i use the discs that were formatted in the MPC, to save seq, sounds and such. I use Cubase Pro 5 and free audio converter to convert my samples and drums to the 16 bit, 44.1 format, and smooth sailing.
Plus my friend went with me when i traded for the MPC, and turns out he had a 32 mb memory stick at his house that he gave me!!!!! He used to have an MPC as well. So i knocked out many birds with 1 stone. maxed out memory, Free......2 zip 100 drives, $20, cables and sodder job, free, all i need is the new pad sensors and thick pads with corx. By the way, it's my first MPC and eventually i want to get a compact flash card reader drive, just on a budget at the moment! i will have pics soon, just wanted to post this because i wish i knew and seen this info around, but someone might benefit from this. Happy beatz....
