Mpc 2000 external hard drive question

I use a external hard drive with my Mpc 2000
From what I've read, if I turn the hard drive off while the Mpc is on there is a possibility of blowing the Scsi fuse, is that correct?
I always turn my hard drive on first then the Mpc and turn the Mpc off then the hard drive at the end of a session.

Thing is, the hard drive is a bit noisy and seems to be spinning at full speed all the time it's on.
Is that normal?
And for a the most part of the time I'm using the Mpc it is not serving any purpose.
I just wonder if there is a way of circumventing whatever triggers what I assume is a power surge to be able to switch it on and of only when in use?
Any ideas?

If not I'll make another box with wood and felt to muffle the noise slightly with some holes for the air to pass through.

Old scsi drives will sound loud regardless if they're idle or not man. I know what you mean though, the sound can get bothersome when we're in 2015 and used to having quieter computers.

A wood box would obstruct the noise but keep in mind, SCSI drives run quite hot so it'll end up being more trouble in the long run.

Yeah it's a bit of a bummer.
Other than the noise it's great, I spent about a year struggling with floppy's that continually kept getting corrupted.
It was probably the floppy drive itself.

It's such a relief having so much room to save stuff , all the sounds easily accessible, and being able to work on stuff for more than a day without loosing it all.
I think a little box might work, but like you say I'll make sure it's ventilated.
If that doesn't work I'll knock a hole in the wall and put it in next doors house - problem solved.

before making a wooden box, try a simple shoe box with holes (for venting) and see how much noise reduction there is. also not sure how long your scsi cable is but try a 6 foot scsi cable to distance the hard drive from your work area.

Does the HD have a built-in fan? You could replace that if it's contributing to the noise.

What hard drive are you using? I've been looking at a few SCSI external hard drives but I'm afraid of buying the wrong one and sending money down the drain.

Do not buy a hard drive bigger than 18gb, otherwise the MPC will not even format it.

Im using this hard drive (click here) that my father made me to work with the 2000. I think it was for a Mac, can hold 200mb.
Because of the PC power supply its quite noisy, yet would you still suggest me not to turn it off or else it'll harm the MP?

The drive is hooked up to a power supply that belongs in a PC tower, which is why it's so noisey. Find yourself an external SCSI drive case on ebay and you'll run a lot quieter.

I've never seen anyone hook it up like that. That would obviously explain why you have so much noise. Go on eBay, type SCSI enclosure and grab yourself one.

bring it close to the closet.. and put the power supply in there.. and close the door with the wires going under the door
