Is my 2000 worth trying to fix?

Hey everybody, I've got a 2000 classic sitting next to me that's broken. It turned on for about 15 minutes before failing completely. I took it to the shop, they said looks like a bunch of drink spills, missing screws and IC corrosion were probably the problems. It'll cost me way too much to get them to fix it. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and a multi-meter I have an s950 I bought to replace it, but the MPC is just sitting there and it looks damn cool. Should I give it a shot? Will it be expensive?

If you can fix it all yourself then it's probably worth it. If you need to pay someone to do it, or it needs some major components replacing (e.g. the main board) then it's probably cheaper to just buy a working one off ebay.

Depends on how bad the board is. Look up contact cleaner. Open it up and check it out. If you have minor corrosion it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Good weekend project.

If you arent good at fixing electronic gear, you can totally dissemble it sell the individual parts.

MPC-STuff.com buys old MPCs in any shape. They would give you the most they can because they can take it apart and sell the parts, like the floppy/screen/case ect.

Its definitely worth a shot, is the only problem that it will not power on?

You need to take it to someone and at least get an idea of what could be failing on it. Otherwise you'll get roped into paying all this cash.

Its the same thing as when women take their car to the mechanic and say 'my car isn't working. can you fix it' and then charge you for stuff that isn't even a matter.

My 2k had some sort of gunk over a ram chip that was causing crashes and sample corruption, but a clean with some alcohol and a careful clean up sorted it.

If its had a bunch of spills then it might not be that simple for yours.

Green/blue/white crystal deposits on the board are pretty much fatal - this is the copper (and other metals) reacting with water(or beer) and oxidising.

Certainly worth cleaning the entire board with Isopropyl Alcohol and blasting it with a compressed air can to get it all out from under the ICs. I've had many a dead board in all kinds of gear come back this way.

Hell yeah! I'd fix it if I knew how. MPC 2000 is a classic machine. Plenty people trying to get their hands on one. I have one. Had a few problems. Easy fixes though. It's worth fixing yourself and keeping. Good Luck!
