Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By craveone Wed Dec 16, 2015 2:58 pm
I have recently purchased an Akai s3200xl. i have plugged it up to my mpc2000 classic. the s3200xl is receiving a midi signal from the mpc2000 just fine... in fact the test tone plays all across the pads on the mpc. i chopped up a break lastnight, did the multi program for it on the s3200xl. i assigned each hit to a specific key... and well, none of it transfered over to the mpc... i then went to program on the mpc and hit a pad, noticed one of them said A-0... so i tried to make one of the sounds on the xl go with the note A-0. and nothing... i do get what i think is a kick sound maybe on one of the pads... but it sounds like it is slowed way down... any help here would be great! my midi knowledge only goes to plugging a midi keyboard into a laptop with the usb and assigning things in ableton.... which is super easy to see what is going on... hardware however feels like a whole new world

Dumb question...but did you save the program on your 3200xl and then also remember to load it again? When you say you hit a pad on the MPC and it plays what seems to be a kick, but really slow, it sounds like you're just playing back that sample in particular, which means you haven't loaded the program you saved your chops to and you're just playing back the kick sample chromatically because you're in the menu with samples instead of the one with presets/programs.

Ok I got the exact same setup. It's gonna take a while to nail it, but you're on the right track.

Each pad on the MPC triggers a different note number. The easiest way to find the note number is to put the MPC in MIDI mode (like you've done on the track already) and go into your S3K program, and on the "Span" section, press the "MOn" key (I think it's F8). Then you can press the pad on the MPC you wanna assign the sound to twice (once for the low key & once for the high key). Then you have to set the Pitch of each key group to "Const" so that it doesn't try to tune it up or down (that's the low-pitch Kick you probably heard).

If you're doing drums, you probably also wanna set the playback type to "One Shot". It's on the 2nd page of the "Samp" menu I think. The easiest way to do all of this is to set up one key group, then duplicate it by going back out into the main Program -> Edit menu & pressing the "+" key to add more key groups. That way, all you have to do is go in to each key group, change the Span as described above, and change the sample as desired.

Would be a lot easier to show than to type, but holler if you have more questions.

I think i understand now... i was going into span and doing it on the s3200 with the scroll wheel instead of actually hitting a pad on the mpc.... going to try this tonight... im hoping i get a new backlight for it soon as its hard to see the screen... ive had to use my flashlight app on my phone and shine it on the screen to see anything... its kind of a pain in the ass set up right now . thanks for the info though, i'll report back once ive tried this...

You can do it with the scroll wheel too, it just takes much longer. Unless you know the MIDI notes by memory, but even then it's easier to just hit the pad.

On the backlight, you've tried adjusting the contrast & pushing the display button right? It might just be turned off.

the knob for the backlight is all the way up, so yes... its there, but barely visible... i have a replacement coming in the mail... i didn't even think to just hit the pad that im wanting to use honestly... i thought you HAD to use the scroll wheel... and no, i don't know the midi notes and all of that... lame

fixed...

you can set it to drum1:1A too. it would be a drum track that outputs a midi track as well.

still, op's problem is with the external sampler, so that's moot.

so it took me a while to get everything sorted. but i finally got it, thanks for the input. on the s3200xl you go to smpl and change the track to constant. i was getting stuck with the f8 mod command that you had posted. but finally did some tinkering and figured it out... thanks so much man, it was really started to become annoying... part of the fun with these old machines is figuring out how to use them. i'll be tackling synths and modifying samples with this thing soon enough
