Auto chromatic assign program question

I have just connected my midi keyboard to my XL. I can now play a sample on the MPC by using my keyboard. It was easy and straight forward. I know I am missing something simple.
My question is: I need to add drums to the keyboard rhythm. I can't do both at same time. When I go add drums, I go to the drum samples and play. My keyboard recording does not play. My keyboard record in only play when I'm on that program. Can someone please tell me the correct process to play my auto chromatic keyboard rhythms with my drum samples.

Setting the Track Type This sets the track to either the sound source within MPC2000XL or other external MIDI devices.

+ Select the field as shown above with the CURSOR keys and select between MIDI and Drum 1 – 4 by rotating the DATA wheel. MIDI Allows data input from devices such as MIDI keyboards and uses the track to play the sound source of external MIDI devices. Drum 1 – 4 Allows data input from DRUMS PAD and uses the track to play the internal sound source. Because programs can be assigned individually to DRUM 1-4, the tracks can be assigned to different drum programs and up to 4 different programs can be played at the same time.
