Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I spent the weekend trying to replace the internal floppy with a Iomega zip 250 via ide. The I connected the power supply correctly and the drive powers on. Problems started when I realized I did not have a 40 pin ide ribbon. I managed to modify a 39 pin ribbon by digging out the closed off space for the extra pin. I made sure to align pin 1 correctly on both the board and the unit and set the jumper to master. But every time I powered every up connected I got a white screen and all led's on. I dont know if the problem is with the os not being updated to 1.14 or 1.20 or with the ide ribbon. or with the zip drive compatibility. Any advice is appreciated
