Unresponsive Pads 2000XL

hey guys i just bought a 2000xl was sold to me as a fully functional unit all 16 pads are unresponsive tho... was wondering if this is somewhat common have had no response from the seller & would hate to throw more money at it only to be disappointed... is there any other part of the machine that could cause this to happen or you think the pad sensor should do the trick?

i have triple checked this problem thru the mixer, program & padchk modes all 16 pads are for sure dead as is have tried re seating as well

I was thinking some contact cleaner might do the trick until I noticed the ends all look burnt/discolored.. Will give it a go anyways and let you know if it works!

I am currently running build 1.06 have no idea if this is the original build am new to the series & the little bit of knowledge I have acquired has been thru forums trying to troubleshoot the issue xD

The seller didn't include original OS am unsure if I can format without the floppy disk had read somewhere once you format you need to put the disk in each time you start the machine will have to do a bit more research prior to investigating that bit...

I have also reached out to the guys at mpcstuff & they were saying I should start with a new pad sensor & if that doesn't do the trick it could be a problem with the top function PCB...

If cleaning the contacts don’t work, get the pad sensor from MPC Exchange. It’s durable af and at a great price. I use them all the time for client’s MPC2000XL and MPC3000’s.

No luck after cleaning contacts unfortunately

Actually just heard back from the seller simultaneously after no response the past couple days.. Will see what he's able to do for me & investigate a little further in the meantime..

I just thought, try using a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Use light pressure.

Does the XL have the 8 out expansion installed?

Thanks for that Juke will give it a go! Gonna be my last attempt to fix these sensors & if i don't hear back from the guy by Monday just gonna go ahead & replace them...

For Richie, no 8 outs were included is something i'm gonna look into at a later date The tascam portastudio 488 caught my eye am currently just working with a numark m6 & i got a few cassette decks as well! Money is kinda tight atm am thinking when I have some spare cash will be grabbing those 8 outs & a portastudio or an sp-808

I think your pads may be fine.

Have a look in the lower right hand of the motherboard and post a pic



I believe it'll be worth your time to check if that resistor on your mainboard is dead.

No problem here! Extremely impressed with the build quality of this machine can also tell it's been well maintained over the years! At this point am just gonna go ahead and purchase the new pad sensor

"No problem here!" ?? What was result of the resistance when testing? It should be reading back at 4.0 ohm / 1w. The replacement resistor is also rated at 4.7ohm 1W 5%

I've had a few XL's that had "dead pads" and swapping out the resistor resolved the issue. It's a lot cheaper to do then spending $80 cdn to replace the pads.

I don't have a multimeter atm unfortunately Really jumped the gun on that I apologize still learning xD Was looking for blown capacitors did a bit of research and am thinking that you are spot on! Between the screen & burnt ends on the pad sensor is making a lot of sense! Will have to find a multimeter & check that prior to installing the new sensor once it shows up.. in the meantime had a couple more questions in regards to this...

The resistor in the picture is located on the mainboard somewhat separate from the other components does that specific resistor play a vital roll in the machines overall health? Did notice some smaller ones scattered across the top button control board am unsure if all of these things tie together current wise once they all communicating back & forth...

I have no issues with any other parts of the machine as far as i can tell, all buttons work with 0 issues have full use of the slider & jog wheel, floppy drive is working & the ins & outs + headphone jack as well on the back of the machine, am thinking i will test the midi ins later today I am able to sample into the machine & assign to pads but all 16 pads unresponsive...

Apologies once again if any of this sounds stupid am very new to this & as always the help is always appreciated!


***nothing lags or jumps around while navigating thru the rest of the mpc

Also thinking i might open er up again & just let it run for an hour & see if anything is hot to the touch, no burning smell has been detected the last few times i had it open smells like carpet cleaner or something on the inside, no oxidation so it would have been external

Midi ins are working 0 latency

I don't know why it came out as 4.0 when i responded - the resistor is 4.7 ohm 1w at 5%
