Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
Bychooch71 Sat Oct 16, 2004 9:32 pm
Hi. I need help installing an Akai internal 250mb zip. this is the Akai kit so it should be good to go, but it didn't come with instructions. The unit and zip power up, but the unit does not recognize the zip. It still thinks the floppy is there instead. Anyone know what the F*&k i'm doiing wrong?

Thanks

Do you have the 2000 or xl? If it's the xl, did you hook the Zip drive up SCSI or IDE on the inside?

It's an XL. I believe the kit is IDE... It came with two cables. One power, and one data. It looks like there is only one way to really set it up and it looks fairly obvious. But alas, it cannot recoginze the zip. I just want to make sure i have it in correct before I assume it's a software config thing.

Thanks.

- Make sure your ribbon cable is inserted the correct way on the Zip.
- Check that your Zip drive jumper connector is configured for "Master" set up.
- Check to see if you need the +5 volts or 12 volts for Zip operation.

Good luck...

- ribbon cable installed into zip ok
- What do you mean by "Check that your Zip drive jumper connector is configured for "Master" set up"? I see a lable on the back of the zip that talks about some sort of master set up, but I have no idea what it means.
- it is a 5volt zip, and seems to power up ok. disks pop in and out.

Tell me more about this jumper connector configuration. Oh sh*t...i think I know what you are talking about. Should I use the jumper connector to set the zip to master?

hehe

It sounds like you have the wrong jumper setting.

Try master/no slave present
or
single/no slave present

So the kit only came with one jumper, and I tried it in all positions with no luck. There are some settings that are indicated on the back of the zip that require two jumpers (called "Master A' and "Cable Select A"). Should it work with just one jumper, or do I need to go to radio shack and buy another?

Thanks.

2 jumpers for master? I've always seen just one. you might need another then. As you know they are tiny and cost next to nothing. Sure try it. It can't hurt. Try both, CS and MA.

Yeah, share your experience, trial and error so that others can benifit from it..

That would also cut down on the repeated questions, maybe, hopefully, who am I kidding....
