Ok, so , heres something many of yall know already.
I opened the manual to look up one of the many things that
Akai totally left out of the manual. Of course, I ain't find it, but
I found this; something I should have learned years ago!!

You can make a new, 64 pad program, that steps CHROMATICALLY,
(you know, like a real keyboard?), and has separate parameters
for every pad. So, you can take a sample, and make multiple notes.

Just hit shift+program, select the one containing the appropriate sample/pad, then hit the pad to select it. Then hit the soft button F5,
which is AUTO in that screen. it will make a new program with 64 assigned and tuned versions of that same sample. You are not copying the sample, so you don't use up much space at all.

Yes, you can do the same thing with 16levels. But there is a big difference.
First off, 16 levels does not keymap to a controller. You activate it, and
you won't get a whole keyboard of chromatically spread versions of the same sample. Secondly, when you activate 16 levels, you only get 16 notes of the sample on pads.
Third, you don't get separate parameters for each pad. Lets say you sample a bass riff or note from a CD or whatever.
You cut it, filter it, and decay it. Then you realize the nature of a filter:
it's pitch dependant. As you go up the scale, you find that the ish don't thump like the note you started with. But, you don't wanna repeat that note all the time in the sequence. This is because each note in any given scale has it's own resonant frequencies and harmonic overtones, so you can;t just filter and resonate the same for every note.
You feel trapped, and hate on Akai for limiting your rediculous level of creative power. Don't bug out, cus now you can get around that. When you spread the sample out with AUTO chromatic assignment, you are gettting 64 separate pad assignments w/ individual parameter settings. Then you can just change the filter and resonace as you go up the scale to maintain that thump in the bass note, or midrange in the trumpet sample, or whateverthef%*kyouf*%kin with.

If you don't know...now you know.

You mean like in the XL manual.
Chapter 7: Creating and Editing Programs
PG. 117
Auto Chromatic Assign.

Yeah, that was useful, I'm sorry you missed it. Did you get it?
Again, in the XL manual, it was:

Chapter 7: Creating and Editing Programs
PG. 117
Auto Chromatic Assign.

bboutit, w'sup cousin? I remember that very well.

It is a highly used function in my world..

Yeah, it's a basic function, but alot of people just do this with 16 levels function, so I wanted to explain the difference. And yeah, you can learn alot from the manual, but it is far from comprehensive. Go try to look up T for tuning in the index. Oh, my bad, there is no index. Oh, yeah, that makes perfect sense: I would definately guess that tuning a sample would be under 'making a new program'. ??? Go try and find information on adjusting the end margin settings in the 'slice' execution screen.
Try to figure out why the note variation slider is listed as 'real time' in the manual, when it's definately not real-time. There is alot missing, and you do really have to read it from cover to cover, even if you know the theory. I hope someone reads it that needs a better explanation of chromatic functions and filtering. I also posted it cus I was so surprised that such an ill dude such as myself would skip over that.

it is kind of hard to find though, its a good post. It also is listed as autochromatic assign in the manual, and the button in PARAMS is labeled as AUTO. so if dont know jack bout music threoy and chromatic tuning, then u will prob not understand it and never mess with it. so u helped some newbies out. I thought it was funny, casue
I also posted it cus I was so surprised that such an ill dude such as myself would skip over that.

but still a good post. u prob helped a few cats out.

Nothing is perfect I know this already. I just wanted to point out exactly where it was so that like what was already said, newcomers can find it with no hastle.

An ill dude huh? Cool, then go make me a ill sammich.. jk... stay up man...

Be Easy homies, Trupro that was a good post because Auto-chromatic is often looked over and I'm sure alot of cats still may be lost. Just so they know it saves as a whole new program and they have to make sure to switch that in the sequence for the tracks not using that feature. Eventhough it was in the manual I think this is beneficial info and that to me is what this forum is about.

Peace,
D. James

Yeah, it's not a big section in the manual at all. Hopefully someone picked up on this and got knowledge from it. The sammich thing, I was playing around and hope no one got bent about it, I should have used smileys and junk with it. my bad..
Nice dark red MPC djames.

Nah, nah dog. You got a sharp sense of humor. I know if it pisses me off, then it's working. It's a newbie-a$$ feature, so i figured something was coming my way, and I'll take my medicine. Word, hope others can benefit from my lack of patience...

Hollin back, I don't forget anything and I have been wildin with Auto-Chrom every since. That is like a well kept secret, non-secret so to speak. Another thing I remember you telling a cat was, to try everything and PUSH all the BUTTONS, I discover new stuff that way, YES NEW and another thing the manual doesn't have ERRTHING in it.
