Need help with setup

Hey guys,
Just got a mpc2000xl, I have it setup with a turntable and monitor, what else do I need to start making beats. When I hit the pads sometimes the sound out of the speaker is not very responsive.

If your hits sound like they are delayed then you need to change your start time... because you have dead air in front of the chop
