Tempos

I got a question, I think it's a good one. I've been using my mpc 2000xl for maybe 3 months now. I've got a couple samples that sound nice but... When I try to record them onto a sequence I can't get the right tempo/bpm. I see this tap tempo button and i've tried tapping out the tempo but that's not workin too well. I have read the manual. Do you just guess, trial and error the tempo out? Most samples are straight but these few are givin me a headache.

So the question is what is the best way to line up a sample with the right tempo to lace it with drums?

i just estimate. and use the jog wheel to go up or down when i need to. after a while you get familiar with tempos and it wont be hard when you get used to it.

an easy way to do it is record some hihats so you can hear them playing when your trying to match the tempo out. makes it easier to figure if you need to slow down or speed up

Loop the sample, make sure it's tight and then count how many beats (1-2-3-4...10) you get in a minute.
Try and time stretch it to see how many BPMs it is, I think it tells you on the XL.
It's been a while since I've tried any stretching.

I'm guessing you are talking about samples that are breaks or phrases of music.

You can work out the tempo of a loop at the TRIM stage. First thing ....... is the start point neatly trimmed to the front edge of the first beat? Then, if you want your sample to be one bar long set the end point to the front edge of the fifth beat, which will be the first beat of bar two. So you have it trimmed to exactly one bar long. Then go into the PARAMS window. Dial up 4 where it says "Beat:" & it will give you the tempo of that sample on the line below.

If you are wanting your two different samples to work together, first find the tempo of each of them by this method. Then, on the same PARAMS page in TRIM you can use Tune to match the tempos, or timestretch.

yeah featherboy on point as normal.
for the tap tempo shit to work better goto OTHER mode and set the tap tempo to 4 instead of 2 and u will get more accurate bpm readings.
